Luweero Industries Ltd (LIL) has signed a pact with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to make and repair pumps for the country’s water utility.
Nakasongola-based LIL is a subsidiary of the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), which is the commercial arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). On Tuesday, March 4, LIL and NWSC signed a three-year agreement in which the two government entities committed to transact business, do research and exchange innovations.
Former deputy inspector general of police, Maj Gen Sabiiti Muzeeyi, now the general manager of LIL and NWSC managing director Dr Eng. Silver Mugisha signed the groundbreaking pact in Kampala.
According to the agreement, LIL will manufacture and maintain NWSC’s electro-mechanical equipment such as water pumps. LIL engineers will also be involved in the development of NWSC’s compact wastewater treatment plants, foundry works and production of spare parts, among others.
Previously, NWSC has been importing most of the aforesaid equipment from abroad in a process that is not only expensive but also time-consuming. Speaking after the signing ceremony held at the NWSC headquarters in Nakasero, Kampala, Mugisha noted that the agreement lead to efficiency and gains in NWSC operations through cost reduction, elimination of red tape and ensuring timely completion of projects.
Mugisha stated: “This collaboration with Luweero Industries will help the government save the amount of money spent on importing and reconditioning water pumps from the three to six months spent when imported to 21 days when the pumps are reconditioned and repaired by Luweero Industries in Nakasongola.”
His LIL counterpart, Maj Gen Muzeeyi said: “One of the areas we are going to work jointly with NWSC is research and development where our engineers will improve and develop products like water pumps that will be used NWSC and further promote the government policy of import substitution.”
