The student reportedly drowned in Seeta High School swimming pool

Seeta High School is once again under public scrutiny following the death of another student on its Mbalala campus, the second unexplained fatality reported at the institution this year.

The deceased, 21-year-old Kevin Nsamba, was a senior six student residing in the school’s boarding section. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the incident occurred on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at around 5:30 p.m.

However, the school remained silent about the incident, sparking fear and widespread speculation in the community. By Monday morning, rumours of Nsamba’s death had spread through Mukono town, with parents, teachers, and residents quietly discussing the incident.

Despite growing concern, neither the school administration nor local police immediately issued a formal statement. Efforts to get official confirmation initially proved futile. It was only later that police formally acknowledged the tragedy.

It is alleged that after participating in a football match with fellow students, Nsamba and others ran toward the school’s swimming pool. At the time, there were trainees in the pool under the supervision of a trainer or lifeguard. Nsamba reportedly jumped into the deep end of the pool.

Later that evening, during a scheduled movie session, students noticed that Nsamba was missing. A search was conducted within the school, but they failed to locate him. His absence was eventually escalated to the principal, who notified police the following day, around midday.

Police registered a suspected drowning case at Mbalala police station, later referring it to Mukono police station. A joint team comprising detectives, the regional CID officer, scene-of-crime officers, fire and rescue services, and forensic experts visited the campus for investigations.

The body was retrieved and taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examination.

Police confirmed that the school’s swimming pool trainer has been arrested to assist in the investigations. Preliminary findings indicate the pool attendant was present during the incident.

CCTV footage from the school is also under review to determine the sequence of events and whether there was any negligence in handling the situation. The footage reportedly showed the deceased jumping into the swimming pool via the deep end and popping out once, and was never seen again.

A troubling pattern in Mukono

This latest tragedy comes just months after the unresolved death of 16-year-old Elishama Ssesaazi, a senior three student at Seeta High School’s main campus, who was reported to have died by suicide.

Police investigations into that case remain inconclusive. The deaths highlight a disturbing pattern of incidents affecting schools in Mukono district. Weeks before Ssesaazi’s death, Carnelian Mary Ndagire, a senior three student at Mpoma Girls’ School, set herself on fire in protest over returning to the institution.

In a separate case, a month after Ssesaazi’s death, Ivan Oloya, a 30-year-old teacher at Seeta High Mbalala, was brutally killed near Code High School. Police arrested five suspects, including a 16-year-old, but the motive remains unclear.

The string of violent and mysterious incidents has intensified community concerns over student safety and the broader state of security in Mukono’s schools.

Mounting pressure on Seeta High School

The back-to-back deaths have left parents anxious and students increasingly fearful. Some parents contacted by URN declined to comment, reflecting a climate of unease and mistrust.

Seeta High School, long celebrated for its academic excellence and strong national exam results, now faces growing accusations of negligence and lack of transparency. Criticism has also emerged over the role of state minister for Higher Education John Chrysostom Muyingo, the school’s proprietor.

Observers fear his dual position could complicate the independence of ongoing investigations. As the community awaits the postmortem results and the outcome of police inquiries, questions persist: Are these tragedies isolated incidents, or signs of systemic failures in school safety and oversight?

  1. Tragic! May the soul of Kevin Nsamba be at peace

But, this is just one of the invisible hands of the curses that comes with the abuse of ‘Professional Ethics’.

Because of the irresistible ‘apparent conflict of interest’, as a school proprietor, Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo or any other Govt Minister and/or MP, should never have been appointed Minister of State for Higher or Lower Education.

In other words, vis-à-vis his first world schools; would Dr. Muyingo equip, staff or promote the best academic performance of the bastardized and neglected Public/govt schools in the 4 corners of this country at the expense of his schools?

    NYET!

And without inheriting a goldmine or oilfield from his immediate parents, remote ancestors, or robbing the Central Bank,; wherefrom did Dr. Muyingo get all that kind of money in such a short time of work, to build such schools?

    Just asking!

  2. The problems of being a public servant; the money is sweet but it opens your private life to public examination…”I worked for years then partnered with certain individuals or entities to create Seeta Schools…” might not be enough.

    Hiccup

  3. This accident happened at seeta main not what your informing the Public please read well or if not kindly go on the ground

  4. It’s really painful 😒 of how a student can die and the school stays silent
