Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine
NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi

The strongest criticism Bobi Wine received after the 2026 election was that it was cowardly not to stand ground and wait for his captors.

Right after or in the final phases of the election, Kyagulanyi received intelligence of potential arrest and went on the run. He left his foot-soldiers and admirers confused: “If you had promised to demand the election – okukabanja – why then run and not take a stand?” journalist, and political commenter Baker Batte Lule – who had emerged as the leader of this critical movement – furiously asked on different platforms.

“By hiding from both state and his people, doesn’t he even realize that he could be arrested and kept away and the state will continue claiming they don’t know where he was hiding?” Batte charged on.

While it would have been good – quite revolutionary – for Bobi Wine to take this stand and wait for his captors (Iranian style), it was all human to run. Indeed, across human history, revolutionaries – from Nelson Mandela, Dedani Kimathi, Yoweri Museveni to Dr Kizza Besigye – have run for their lives when they smelled capture.

They all ran and lived to die another day. This is the human reaction – and in (deliberately?) leaking intelligence to Bobi Wine, Gen. Kainerugaba’s men and the entire “Protecting the Gains” inner circle anticipated this reaction.

What Baker Batte didn’t articulate empathetically, was that Bobi Wine – in being all too human – eased pressure on the regime. Because all through the 2026 election, the NRM-system prepared for the aftermath of the election the most.

The next five, ten to 30 days after. The entire plan included making the much-anticipated protests – even when constitutionally protected – impossible to happen. Because only these actually threaten the status quo.

Thus, the foot-soldiers and entire anti-NRM base had to be denied of its key mobiliser, Bobi Wine. But NRM-UPDF-SFC system had a series of dilemmas, too: They did not want to be forced into a position where they have to bring their entire military might onto the streets of Kampala and murder thousands.

Should they arrest him? But this would be terrible optics: How and why would the incumbent arrest the leading opposition candidate right after a “free and fair” election? How will his electorate and the international community react? How about a house arrest like 2021? They had to do something. What would they do?

SYSTEMS TEND TO OVERWHELM THE ACTIVIST

While I believe there are friendly forces inside the belly of the beast – who work on their own and tip opposition forces on insider schemes – my position remains that the intelligence about his capture was deliberately leaked to Bobi Wine.

The idea was that he would escape to exile immediately, thereby easing their dilemma. But if he did not, they would still arrest him, and brave the music of their actions. Depending on the nature of reaction, they would release him after the political embers had died down.

But they anticipated the initial reaction as the most likely one. To be fair, one cannot really blame a civilian for abandoning his otherwise civilian troops. He didn’t really abandon them. He was overwhelmed by the system.

Opposition forces entranced by the promise and greatness of their icon, tend to forget the reach and might of their adversary – often a sitting government or colonial power. Indeed, Bobi Wine found himself overwhelmed; surrounded by a system that has been doing this for the last 40 years.

With Dr Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obed Lutale still rotting in jail, Bobi Wine knew the system would stop at nothing. Two of his regional vice presidents had been already arrested. Some of his closest friends, Eddy Mutwe, and Waiswa Mufumbiro had been arrested, and over 2000 regular supporters had also been picked by the time we cast the ballot.

He had been watching these arrests. Had I been in his shoes, I would escape to exile, too. But certainly not to the United States. And I would be more sophisticated about the pictures I share with the world.

THE PROJECT NEEDED A MAKEOVER AFTER

2021 In all fairness, comrade brother Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu had a special assignment in the buildup to the 2021 election: overwhelm and overthrow Yoweri Museveni.

Indeed, the chance to openly call for protests and demonstrations – as enshrined in the constitution – was in the aftermath of the 2021 election. He missed many revolutionary windows in 2021. There was none in 2026.

After the conclusion of the 2021 project – even if he had won – Bobi Wine had to have a makeover. He had to become something else. He did not have to continue as National Unity Platform. (For example, had he won, he had to resurrect the Movement system!).

Instead, he was forced into mainstream opposition politics – becoming another FDC – where he finds himself entirely overwhelmed and exhausted. He not only has to deal with Museveni’s experienced and corrosive anti-political party machine, but also has to deal with selfish and opportunistic so-called colleagues.

Most of NUP members and loyalists do not believe in the party, but the masanyalaze Kyagulanyi lends them. Look, if those who missed the party ticket went rogue, and ran as independents, how does he get to trust those who received the ticket?

In fact, one of the things Kyagulanyi will have to contend with while in exile is containing the men and women who won elections. The point I’m making is this: Kyagulanyi shined most as an activist, an icon of the struggle.

He is still the icon, but we are witnessing the pitfalls of starting a political party to fight an autocracy. If he returns to Kampala while Museveni is still president, he will have to abandon party politics completely.

  1. ” Atamukutte y`agamba –” Mukulu Baker Batte and people like him are always going to score many goals from the stands .
With us here , Mw.Sserunkuma should be commended for his observations today .
He names a few revolutionists whose sprits were never broken by strategic exilement. Suffice to mention Ayatollah Khomeini , Gandhi , Napeloen . Lenin …Exile made them winners , eventually .
But ,I beg to differ a little from Mw.Sserunkuma`s take : Kyagulanyi WON the 2021 and 2026 elections . just like the late Paul Ssemwogerere won the 1980 elections . ( Supreme Leaders backed by personal armies do not WIN elections ; they TAKE POWER in ” national interest m until they run out of luck )
Also , 95% of NUP people that did not , or were denied the flag did not resort to throwing tantrums .

  2. “If you had promised to demand the election – okukabanja – why then run and not take a stand?” journalist, and political commenter Baker Batte Lule – who had emerged as the leader of this critical movement – furiously asked on different platforms.” Indeed why was this Ganda gentleman furiously demanding another national election from this NRM government that is a long time dictatorship and counting. NRM government is an imposed rule against the people of the Kingdom state of Buganda. It is now very clear that such an imposed governance cannot be recognised by the decent and civilized citizens of the ancient Kingdom state of Buganda. Any further dealings with the so called Central Government of Uganda in the name of the Kingdom state of Buganda is unfortunately done so perilously!

  3. Doc, let’s be honest: Kyagulanyi’s leadership is a ‘Kiwanyi’ (deception). Uganda is suffering under a militant family rule, yet Bobi Wine continues to mislead the youth into dangerous situations for results he knows will never change. The truth is, Kyagulanyi has led the nation toward a ‘suicide mission’ that has resulted in tragic loss of life, disappearances, and torture. In 2021, he told us to ‘get IDs, go and vote and leave the rest to him,’ but it ended in blood and tears while he secured a seat at the table as the official opposition. His 2026 slogans—Kalonde (vote), Kakuume (protect), and Kabbanje (demand)—proved to be empty promises, or another Kiwanyi (deceit). Kyagulanyi’s true objective was never a revolution, but rather to secure NUP’s position as the leading opposition party in Parliament so that he keeps passing the go and collect taxpayers’ money.
The 2026 ‘Protest Vote’ theme was simply a strategy to maintain this status quo while both sides [M7 & Kyagulanyi] continue to benefit from taxpayer resources. If Kyagulanyi were truly committed to a protest, he would have declared the 2026 elections a sham and withdrawn NUP from all elective positions, including Parliament. While his flight to the U.S. to save his life is understandable, the reality is that his leadership has left Uganda in a state of endless autocracy with no clear hope for change.

  4. Let me say it again, the 2026 ‘Protest Vote’ was just a gimmick to keep NUP in Parliament and keep their hands in the taxpayer’s cookie jar. If Kyagulanyi actually wanted to protest, he would pull every NUP member out of M7’s Parliament today. Instead, he has fled to the U.S. for safety, leaving ordinary Ugandans to face the anarchy he helped create. He didn’t mean anything he said about protecting the vote; he only cared about becoming the biggest player in a rigged system.

  6. Gaslighter Yusuf, someday you will also run into exile. Be careful what you wish for. It might not be the US due to your social media postings because you are a mere PERFORMATIVE writer.

    1. Maybe one KaMuhoozi who has offered to fight Iran on the side of Israel would be the one to send you into exile to Teheran since you are obsessed with that country.

  7. But Dr,. Dr. Yusuf, if Hon Kyagulanyi “… missed revolutionary windows in 2021. (and) There was none in 2026.” when will you organize your revolution and for once and for all; rid Ugandans of the 86-years-old PROBLEM OF AFRICA: the Supremo, AUTHOR and MASTER OF VIOLENCE; who is neither our servant nor employee?

No wonder, like many others who are critical and bad-mouthing BW; if you were in Kyagulanyi’s shoes (luckily you are not and will never be), you would have as well fled town.

In other words, easy said than done. Did Dr. Yusuf ask the ED Chapter Four, Nicholas Opiyo why he fled town?

And what about Dr. Sarah Biretti, who got arrested on eve of the Jan 15 Gen election voting Day; was she more daredevil than Kyagulanyi, or she underestimated Gen Tibuhaburwa’s diabolism?

Otherwise, I just wonder what type of human being so easily associate with praise and/or venerate Gen Tibuhaburwa and Son!

“A man who takes away another man’s freedom is a prisoner of hatred. He is locked behind the bars of prejudice and narrow mindedness (Nelson Mandela, Long Walk to Freedom, pg751).

    1. Its such a pity that Mr. Nocholas Opio has been harassed out of Uganda . We have known the man . Cool-headed , intelligent and carries a heart of Gold. The man is my life has mentioned him as the future CJ or Speaker . Isha Allah.
As for Sarah Bireete , what else is there to say ! Simply put , she was subjected to state terrorism . Full stop.
If “winning an election by land slide” generates this cruelty from the “winners, we don`t want be around when they”lose”

  8. Mr. Wine has a serious Buganda issue. The so-called Buganda elites, like this gaslighter, have betrayed him. That makes one wonder as to why many of them are posting videos of him on the social media for the global audience in Luganda. How can Bobi (now in the US) articulate his message to the rest of world in Luganda? Would his presidency also mean Luganda would be the official language of Uganda?

    1. I am not so sure that Mr-Wine has a serious Buganda issue. HE is a Muganda and there is nothing he can do about it.
Yes , Mr.Wine may have lots and lots of issues , but communicating with Ugandans in NONE OF THEM .
Proof is there for everyone to see . When he was on his campaign tours , he was well received in non Luganda speaking regions more than he was in Buganda .( and . there is a reason why Byabakama`s EC will never publish details of the votes that Mr.Wine got against those those of the Supreme Leader)
The REAL issue is this : if or whenMr.Wine speaks to his home people from abroad in English , some people are heard accusing him of selling Uganda and himself to “colonial masters and homosexuals ; but if he uses Luganda , then he has a “Buganda issue”!!! Should he use Chinese instead ?
With us here , we believe that modern Ugandans have moved on . They see nothing seriously wrong with a Ugandan leader using a language that is most understood by Ugandan in general . I suppose they would not say that Museveni has a Bunyankore issue if he did not practice Bunyankore favouritism as he surely does.
Just a few weeks ago , General Museveni hosted two occasions . One was some type of national prayers at Kololo ; the other was when he , through his daughter , hosted bloggers at his home . On both occasions , he ignored the interpreters and addressed his audience mostly in Luganda .
I am only saying that speaking Luganda is no longer a disqualification unless if it is the only one you can use. There is evidence that Mr.Wine is more than just a Muganda .
BTW: last night , Mr.Wine gave a long speech at a meeting in Washington -in ENGLISH .

      1. The issue is those who post videos in Luganda and expect the Global community to know about Bobi’s plight. They can use the AI voiceover for translation.

        1. I get you Sir.
But I think that those post what they post chose a language that their particular followers appreciate . If the massage is aimed at a Global Community , then the language should change accordingly.
As for Al voiceover , there is that danger of abuse , as we have already seen. People are made to “speak” things they never said , positioned in places where they have never been .
Its a risky innovation , so far .

          1. My suggestion works, because after my comment a video of Bobi in DC appeared with the title “We Speak English”.

      2. Betty do not mind Lysol!

During his campaign trail, whenever BW was in Lango and Acholi, he learnt one powerful expression, UJONE! (translated) banange. And he would always conclude with “Ujone”, and the audience would go WILD with elation.

In other words, that was and still is BW. His charm, youthfulness openness and popularity makes the bloody, 86-YEARS -OLD, 1-foot in the Gen Tibuhaburwa, son and others herein, GREEN with envy and RAGE!

I always remember, how e.g., on their way back home Kampala schools from Buganda Road and/or Nakasero Primary kids would go WILD whenever Kyagulanyi’s Tundra Pickup Truck roared past Sheraton Hotel or near Rwenzori Court.

No wonder the GREEN NUGU was unbearable. Therefore they had to murder Yasin Kawuma and to date, impounded the Blazing Black Tundra in Arua.

Humanly speaking, unless of course one is an organic robot; it is unlikely that one can’t love and/or sympathise with an innocent man like Kyagulanyi. The man made/makes millions happy, inspires hope, confidence and national unity; but is now being hounded around like the worst “criminal against humanity”, by a bunch of diabolic parasitic mediocre made of nugu and dark hatred.

        1. You said it all dear. Apwoyo matek !
May I add that when BM visited Obote`s grave and Hon . Akena then hanged out with Mr.Olara Otunu , some Baganda called him a sell out ?
I think we need to be fair and watch what we say about those who are trying. What has happen to our county in not easy to deal with .

          1. ” Don’t mind” as a concept of ‘Theory of mind”.
In politics they say, if you cannot stand the heat get out of the kitchen.

          2. Betty, what has happened to our country is the degenerate moral bankruptcy.

In other words, because of the 40 years and counting of dehumanizing uncertainty and widespread poverty; on the one hand, many no longer know the difference between the popularity a leader who is genuine (honest) and loved.

On the other, is the popularity of the one who is feared, dubious, manipulative, patronizes (buys cheap popularity) through the abuse of meagre public resources, etc.

In other words, those who are rabidly selfish, ambitious, acquisitive, corrupt (corrupting) and destroying others in the pursuit of position of power, are the ones considered as respectable citizens.

Although they are the most unpatriotic, cruel and foul; they preach and advocate for PATRIOTISM.

And they do not stop there: Through the terror of abduction, torture, illegal and malicious and/or indefinite detention, they expect our fear and absolute LOYALTY!

They are pure EVIL. But they host regular or MONTHLY thanksgiving prayers; during which they donate luxury cars, hundreds of millions of our hard-earned sweat and blood tax money, to the top religious clerics who preside over such thanksgiving nonsense.

And after receiving the bloody gifts, they bow and thank the BOGUS BENEFACTOR for ever. Remember, in less than a year; some of the benefactors singlehandedly build a cathedral and donate it to their parish and named it after their mothers.

That is the kind of vile the country; is either to deal with it or surrender live with it as the new norm.

  9. Hahahaaa, how does “hide” in Uganda for that long with a Phone in use, if these guys wanted him, he could NOT have escaped!

    1. “Wante, you make a valid point. While the regime and its leadership likely wanted Kyagulanyi in custody, they were well aware of the potential for mass unrest, similar to the November 2020 riots where hundreds were killed or disappeared. Museveni’s system relies on such ruthless tactics to silence voices that could spark a true revolution. However, history repeats itself; Besigye faced this same persecution after the 2001 elections. The difference today is that while Besigye remains in prison facing treason charges for refusing to legitimize a rigged system, Kyagulanyi has been allowed to promote a ‘protest vote’ that effectively maintains the status quo. By participating in these elections and fleeing into exile while his supporters remain in ‘torture chambers,’ Kyagulanyi acts more like a safety valve for the regime than a real threat. To many, he appears to be a ‘fugazi’—a distraction that validates Museveni’s hold on power while the true resistance [Besigye] languishes behind bars.

  10. Let’s be clear: Museveni knows exactly who the real threat is. That is why Dr. Kizza Besigye is currently in prison facing treason, while Kyagulanyi was free to lead a ‘protest vote’ that changed nothing. The 2020 arrests showed the regime that detaining Bobi Wine causes immediate chaos, so they used a different tactic this time: pushing him into exile. Kyagulanyi’s 2026 campaign was a ‘Kiwanyi’ (deceit) that only served to legitimize the January results. While he addresses crowds in Washington, ordinary Ugandans who followed his lead are still missing or detained in torture chambers. If he were the ‘real deal,’ he would be standing with Besigye in a cell or delegitimizing the entire elective process, rather than keeping NUP in a Parliament funded by taxpayers. M7 knows Kyagulanyi is just making noise, which is why the truly defiant voice is the one currently being silenced in jail.

  11. Don’t laugh off and underestimate Bobi Wine. He might be on the run though he carries the weight of majority Ugandans who are fed up with this regime. First and far-most is likeable, second is a good mobilizer across tribes boundaries. Bobi has part of David sides when it comes to talent-singing. He’s just walking the foot steps of King David. Whatever next step he takes, don’t be surprise to see mushrooms pop up across Uganda as an uprising. We here that in the NRA bush war, Sevos was not the best fighter. His brother Salim Saleh, the likes of Rwigyema, Kayira, etc were far better fighters. Visualize what could happen between the tired, old guards of UPDFs vs Bobi young, volatile and committed supporters, if Bobi decided to stand up and fight. It would be bloody. Do the math! How many would be ready to join him? So let’s give Bobi credit for being considerate to his supporters, and even the army servicemen. His time is just around the corner.
