President Yoweri Museveni has temporarily suspended cabinet and parliamentary sessions to enable National Resistance Movement (NRM) members to participate in the party’s upcoming grassroots elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Museveni announced the suspension of Monday’s cabinet meeting and asked the speaker of parliament, Anita Among, to halt Tuesday’s plenary session to allow ministers and Members of Parliament to take part in the exercise.
“I am alerting and requesting all NRM members to go to their respective village centers by 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, to do two things: take part in the baraza to verify members registered in the NRM registers, and elect the NRM LCI flag-bearer for chairmanship, as well as other village NRM structures,” Museveni said.
He emphasized that the activities must be conducted strictly between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. The president added that he would personally participate in the verification exercise at his home village of Rwakitura, while the First Lady, Janet Museveni, will do the same in Ireenga village, Ntungamo.
However, Museveni clarified that he would not be endorsing any candidate.
“As chairman of the NRM, I welcome any choice of our members. I cannot and should not, therefore, take sides,” he said.
The NRM exercise is part of broader preparations for the 2026 general elections, scheduled for January. Political parties have already begun implementing their electoral roadmaps to select flagbearers for various positions.
Last week, both the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and the Democratic Party (DP) closed the window for expressions of interest from those seeking their party’s presidential flagbearer slots.
DP president Norbert Mao declared his intention to continue leading the party and contest as its presidential flagbearer. In FDC, both party president Patrick Amuriat Oboi and secretary general Nathan Nandala Mafabi picked nomination forms to vie for the flagbearer position. Unlike in DP, the FDC party president does not automatically become the presidential candidate.

That is typical NRM so called African national democracy. Where in the countryside there is no money to process village national elections. However there is about 4 trillion shillings in the Bank of Uganda to oil the coming national elections of 2026 for another rap to re-elect President Museveni until 2031. Hundreds of old and new sub-counties and municipalities have run for now many years without elected leadership and government funding and are at risk of repeating the feat after this so called democratic national election of 2026. This famous and long serving NRM chairman seems to be warning his die-hard followers not to bring with them lugezigezi in the NRM village baraza during the 4 hours he has given them to discuss their democratic political rights . That means there must not be any competition whatsoever in such democratic leadership elections. There should be no asking questions and debates especially about the leadership positions of representatives in the Rwakitura and Ntungamo villages located in the Ankole Kingdom state! Full stop.
Kabayekka, this goes to show that M7 owns Uganda as my dearest Akot reminds repeatedly and consistently keeps reminding us. Where is the separation of power between the executive and parliament? To suspend both the cabinet and parliament because the meeting for the NRM clearly shows that we, the people, don’t have the power and there’s no democracy as Kyagulanyi claims.
Certainly, no one is surprised that M7 owns Uganda. He commands the executive and orders both parliament and judiciary at will. Not only that taxpayers money pays for the meetings of NRM but the state house is NRM headquarters. All on our taxpayers money.
Then Kyagulanyi has the audacity to tell us that we have the power and there’s democracy in Uganda.
What do we benefit from parliament? It’s only those in power who benefit and get paid handsomely for doing nothing for us. That’s why Kyagulanyi, NUP and others passionately love going to war [bogus and violent elections].
Remase you have got a point. NUP is certainly being pushed further in that political trap the FDC of Dr Kizza Besigye fell into many years back. FDC and many more of these enthusiastic multi party political parties encouraged their die hard supporters to continue to participate in violent and rigged national elections that were not free and fair until finally these dodgy parties cracked and the sincere electorate run away from them. The 4 trillion shillings in the national Bank of Uganda to spend on national elections is indeed a lot of money for many African politicians to take the bait!
I knew you would say it is Kyagulanyi’s fault. … hahahahaha….. soooo despicable!!
The real reason was to avoid parliament discussing Eddy Mutwe
Correct
Anyway the MPS especially those of NRM are his slaves and as usual must obey orders with the expected cash to water they greed
