Authorities are yet to make a significant breakthrough in investigations following a brutal arson attack on a farm in Butibulongo village, Katale Kammese Parish, Kito sub-county, Luwero district.
The incident, which occurred on January 26, 2025, left several workers injured and resulted in the destruction of property, including four makeshift tents and four vehicles. The farm was raided by a group of unidentified attackers armed with machetes and sticks.
The assailants invaded the premises at night, targeting workers who were asleep in their tents. Several workers were assaulted, forcing them to flee for their lives. During the attack, the assailants set fire to four makeshift tents and four vehicles, including a Canter Elf (reg no. UAM 252Q) and a Pajero (reg. no. UAS 044J).
A tractor was burnt beyond recognition, and a bulldozer was also destroyed. The attackers also made off with an unspecified amount of fuel and other valuable items from the camp. Savannah Regional Police spokesperson, Sam Twiineamazima, confirmed that a case of arson and malicious damage to property had been filed.
He noted that the injured individuals were taken to a hospital for treatment, and a manhunt was underway to apprehend those responsible. When asked about the status of the investigations, Twiineamazima admitted that there had been no progress.
“No update as of now,” read part of his message to URN.
The arson attack in Butibulongo village is part of a worrying trend of similar incidents plaguing the Savannah region, which includes the Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola districts.
In November 2024, police in Luwero district launched an investigation into another arson attack targeting a surveyor’s vehicle amid an escalating land dispute. The incident occurred in Kibula-Nsanvu village, Bwaziba parish, Luwero sub-county. Authorities responding to a distress call found a vehicle burnt beyond recognition.
Investigators recovered items, including sticks and jackets, believed to be linked to the attack. A case of malicious property damage was filed, but the perpetrators remain at large.
Reports indicate the vehicle belonged to surveyors assessing a disputed parcel of land claimed by multiple parties. The recent attacks underscore the urgent need for authorities to address the growing issue of arson-related violence in the region.
