The death toll has risen to 33

According to police and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), 120 people have been registered in the temporary shelter at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School playground as victims.

The findings further indicated that 33 homes were buried under the garbage on Saturday. Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said they also suspect that as high as 39 died following the accident.

“These 39 are the people who were registered as missing by this committee. This includes 35 who are community members and well-known residents and then four are garbage collectors who were found sorting the garbage by the time of the incident,” revealed Onyango.

Meanwhile, four bodies were retrieved by Thursday bringing the total number of retrieved bodies to 34 on the sixth day of the rescue operation at Kiteezi.

Among the retrieved bodies on Wednesday were those of Hairati Natumanya, 20, Ronald Lwere, 3-year-old Moses Owori, Richard Okello, 31, Jane Alowo, 33, and 6-year-old Jane Achengi.
