The army has ordered the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) to team up with police to investigate the murder of Maj Muhammad Kiggundu and his bodyguard, The Observer has learnt.
In a Tuesday interview, the commander in charge of Criminal Investigations and Intelligence in Kampala Metropolitan, Johnson Olal, said CMI was getting involved because Kiggundu was a soldier.
Olal added that in case of key suspects, the army would compile the results of its investigations and submit them to police, which would prepare a file for the director of public prosecutions.
Maj Kiggundu and his escort Stephen Mukasa were gunned down on Saturday morning in Masanafu trading centre, Lubaga division, with police spokesman Felix Kaweesi pointing the initial finger on Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) which the senior UPDF officer used to belong to.
Olal also confirmed that police has discovered the guns that were used by assailants to murder Maj Kiggundu. This came after an examination of the bullet cartridges discovered at the scene of crime.
“Our forensic report has revealed that AK47 and Uzi guns were used to murder Maj Kiggundu and his bodyguard,” Olal said. “We have identified the killer guns but I cannot tell if they belonged to police, army or prisons because we have not got them yet.”
MAMA FIINA STATEMENT
Olal further said that police will record statement from Mama Fiina (Sophia Namutebi), one of the wives to the deceased, who said he had showed her threats sent to him by phone.
“After she stabilises, she will give the statement because she had the last words with Maj Kiggundu before he was gunned down,” he said.
Olal added that police has got some more clues into the murder of Maj Kiggundu, although he declined to discuss them.
“We have got some clues about the killers and we are following them seriously. They could lead us to killers,” he said.
Police is still holding Sheikh Omar Mwanje, the first suspect arrested over the shooting, at Nalufenya.
