Erias Lukwago representing Kizza Besigye and Obed Lutale

Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court has further remanded Dr Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale to Luzira Prison until May 21 as investigations into treason and misprision of treason charges continue.

Besigye and Lutale, alongside UPDF Captain Denis Oola, appeared today, Wednesday, before chief magistrate Esther Nyadoi, who ordered their continued detention. Their lawyers, led by Erias Lukwago, protested the harsh treatment of their clients, alleging that they are being held in solitary confinement and denied access to their families and legal counsel despite being presumed innocent.

According to Lukwago, the state’s treatment of Besigye and Lutale implies that they are already viewed as convicts without any court ruling establishing their guilt.

The case was adjourned to May 21, pending the outcome of an appeal Besigye’s lawyers filed, challenging a court decision to hear evidence from a police officer in an application where prosecutors seek access to Besigye’s and Lutale’s phones in a hearing closed to the public and media.

Chief state attorney Richard Birivumbuka expressed frustration over delays in disposing of the appeal, which the defense attributed to judicial transfers and changes at the High court.

Last week, Besigye and Lutale filed a second bail application in the High court, seeking release from custody, where they have now spent over 150 days battling the treason-related charges.

This came after justice Rosette Kania Comfort dismissed their first bail application on April 11, 2025, arguing that they were likely to interfere with ongoing investigations, noting that treason is “the gravest offence under Ugandan law.”

The new application is yet to be fixed for a hearing. Prosecutors allege that the trio, while in Geneva in Switzerland, Athens in Greece, Nairobi, Kenya, and Kampala, solicited firearms, logistical, and financial support and attended meetings with the intention of overthrowing the Ugandan government.

  1. It wants to look as if the Lord Mayor of Kampala, Erias Lukwago, is no longer doing any important administrative work for the city of Kampala as he is so busy in the courts of law defending his political President of FDC political party. This country of the Republic of Uganda seems to be seated in a political circus where there seems to be three Presidents in the Republic of Uganda. That is President Tibuhaburwa, President Kizza, and finally but not least honourable President Bobi Wine. As these Presidents struggle to convince the people of this poor African country to elect them democratically especially as the democratic elections of 2026 approach, they are bent on fermenting chaos for another brutal civil war for this poor African country. Unfortunately these African gentlemen hate each other enormously. Such a spectacle has been the normal since this country got its independence 63 years ago. The Kingdom state of Buganda is not going to accept such Presidential misbehaviour to continue to go on in its backyard. The peaceful Kingdom state of Buganda in its history did tell off the troublesome and violent central government of Uganda to get off the territory of Buganda because of its inhumane political misbehaviour. Buganda is not going to participate in the next undemocratic national elections. Such national elections are violent, rigged and not free and fair. The Kingdom state of Buganda to continue to participate in such national elections, under such inhumane political climate, does so at its own peril.

  2. Such misbehaviour is unprecedented on the part of President Museveni’s long misrule. In one hand he holds on to national rigged elections and on the other hand he holds on to state power with the almighty of the power of the gun and money! Exactly like all the previous central governments of Uganda have been doing for many years and counting!

  3. Powerless tribally divided ruled Ugandans just ensure the zone formed by their tribal lands belongs to Rwandese Museveni for good, so there is no need for more fake presidential, parliamentary, local elections!

Time Museveni dissolve posts of tribal leaders & become a real man, just as Sudanese Idi Amin was; no fake presidential election, no fake parliament!

No tribal leader owns tax money & give Public/Social Services to subjects, but are payed by Museveni’s tax money for doing absolutely NOTHING for subjects!

Museveni, you don’t need tribal leaders any more as Ugandans won’t UNITE, so why continue paying them for doing NOTHING knowing non will fight you to get back the post/free money you given them, so why continue giving them the money?

More so, tribal leaders have shown, proved they don’t care about subjects, but just themselves & families!

  4. These judges should put to practice what they learned and stand on their spinal cords and not on a diabolical dictator with his coyotes. They are a disgrace and have come to be regarded as a joke. No more respect or trust.
