President Yoweri Museveni

Where does one begin this story? How does one accept the Kagutas’ half-hearted apology in 2025 – amidst all that the country knows.

This is 40 years of gangster, remorseless and arrogant criminality. Yet, this is what I am going to do. But while I accept this apology, behind my back, I feel the boiling anger of millions of Ugandans – including myself – who painfully listened to this apology as more crimes were still being committed at the same time.

Stock-taking: Northern Uganda – we now know enough that Joseph Kony’s ragtag army was just the excuse.

Teso crimes: what is truly fake about Speaker Anita Among leaked audio detailing Museveni’s crimes in Teso sub-region is just the AI voice – the crimes are public knowledge. Rwenzori-Rwenzururu crimes: these Museveni chaps dropped a bomb on a palace. Luweero crimes: the skulls aren’t yet buried.

Safe houses: these fellows were plucking knee caps off their victims’ knees. Murders of Muslims and other clerics. Assassinations. Poisonings. Auctioning country to foreigners and thereby impoverishing entire populations.

This list is 40 years long. In this context, an apology looks like a masquerade – a cover for something else. Look, not only is Museveni NOT signaling to putting an end to these crimes – by precisely giving Uganda a chance to re-imagine itself without him, but he is also only continuing.

Not too long ago, Museveni pushed through parliament a return of the tortuous Court Martial and wants the military to try civilians. His son, who now occupies the position of chief of defence forces, continues to gloat about his crimes.

He is proudly abducting and maiming people and arrogantly implicating an entire ethnic community. That they are in his “basement learning Runyankore,” and more candidates have been lined up for the basement.

Then he came out to apologise – in what is perhaps the most imperfect, poorly-timed, and remorseless apology in history.

Crime life is crime life

To begin with, Ugandans have to appreciate the painful fact that crimes keep Museveni in power. Indeed, after about 15-20 years in power, unless one is a monarch, any ordinary person – like our Yoweri Museveni – can only stay in power through coercion, violence, torture, deception, imprisonment, bribery, murders, humiliation, etc.

Therefore, as long as he is still in power, crimes have to be committed. There is no other way. Thus, as he was reading the apology at Kololo, Ugandans were being tortured in his son’s basement, as others were being abducted off the streets.

Like other political prisoners, an innocent man such as Dr Kizza Besigye was still rotting in jail as Museveni read his apology. The point I am making here is that an end to these crimes actually means Museveni losing power.

Secondly, I am not sure how specific we wished Museveni could be about his long list of crimes. These are 40 years. What is he supposed to include and leave out? I thus want to see this as the beginning of a country apology tour – soon to be launched. (Folks from Teso ought to be patient, the man is coming).

In the same breath, it would be unthinkable for this man not to call his crimes, ‘mistakes. Otherwise, calling them crimes would be a public acknowledgement, yet this is a quest for mercy, and fears of retribution.

The point I am labouring to make is this: the journey we have ahead of us is long and dangerous but definitely needs to begin from somewhere. An imperfect apology is all we needed to get us started.

Patience and Natasha

Dear reader, it is arguable that this gesture was forced onto the Kagutas by their daughter, Patience Rwabwogo. No wonder, it seemed rushed, incoherent, and not from the heart – with neither specifics nor signs of remorse.

They seem to have done it to please their daughter more than seeking forgiveness from the country. But whatever happened towards this public reading of an apology; whatever arguments prevailed for it to happen; this is a welcome gesture – with all its imperfections.

I want to persuade you, dear reader, that this ought to be treated as a sign – a signpost for things to come. We should accept it, and while we do, acknowledge the work of the man’s girls Natasha and Patience.

They may be less powerful in this entire monster of a regime, but seem to be using their space more carefully, more meaningfully. Not too long ago, eldest daughter Natasha Museveni profusely thanked her parents for the job “and sacrifices” made for the country. (I can hear you).

What she didn’t say – but easily inferable – was that they needed to take the next bus back to Rwakitura. Then, a couple of months later, Patience asked them to apologise to the country. It must have been hard on them, but they tried their best. (I know, it was nowhere near). There are two things readable from these signposts: first is the loud but indirect acknowledgment that the end is nigh.

Like Sam Kutesa who built a church instead of a hospital, it is a message that we have almost reached the end of our long-stay. This is actually an indirect call on the country to ready itself more for a new beginning. It will be such a beginning.

Second, the apology ought to be understood as the beginning of a long – certainly arduous journey – towards giving Uganda a chance. As someone who continues to ask the Kagutas to give Uganda a chance when they still can, I find this a good beginning. (Although that the crimes continued at the same time as they apologised is really difficult to stomach).

Against the above, I am making a plea to these two wonderful women: we see your work, and we are confident you can do much more. Ask the old man to spare some time – and a peaceful future – for his grand and great grandchildren. There is still a window to make amends.

  1. It is indeed very difficult to understand the perfection of humanity between these two Africans, Yusuf and Kaguta as they show off to the suffering Uganda public their apologies and forgiveness. One believes these two have no relatives who might have suffered or died due to the current military governance of 40 years. Kaguta even insists that by 1960/1961, 64 years ago, he was around and kicking as he watched the highly cultured Ganda political party of Kabaka Yekka meting out revenge violence in the countryside, against the mandate of the political party of the Democratic Party of Benendicto Kiwanuka. Kaguta had tears in his eyes by then as he watched the national election violence of a new approaching independent African country of Uganda! This first Prime Minister of the new state of Uganda and the former President of the political party of Democracy, Benedicto Kiwanuka 1960/62, wanted badly to convince and take the Kingdom state of Buganda into some sort of federation with the neighbouring African tribal states of the British Protectorate of Uganda. Well the rest is history. Difficult indeed to apologise and to
make human perfection especially to the already dead citizens of this country. In India as a vegetarian nation, everyday they apologise to their creator against those that savagely kill living organisms and eat their meat. For humans apologising to fellow humans is indeed very difficult dear my friend Yusuf Serunkuma. The human spiritual perspectives make it more difficult indeed. The bible says apologise 77 times a day and forgive 77 times and pay back something. The young rich man could not take such stuff from such a great good book. This perfect young man told Jesus that all such bible stuff I have tried to do as written. “What do I still lack?” Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.…(money…money)

  2. Thank you for the article.
What I have learned is that Anita Annet Among has very many enemies…that is not the first “leaked audio” about her, well, we make our own beds…

  3. Notorious Robbers Army/Movement caved out of FRONASA a Gang Mob led by The Devil Himself that Ran amok in Ankole in 1979 Claiming that They have Cut the Tree Others have to remove the Branches! Meant were Muslims in Sheema District who were Cornered, Butchered and Their Dead Bodies Dumped in River Rwizi! Those Who survived Buried their Dead in Mass Graves in Nyamitanga!! They are there to be Visited! Then Came Luwero Triangle where 1.000.000 Ugandans lost their Lives at the Hands of NRA claiming to Fight Obote and his Men! Rwanda was Next, 1.000.000 Poor Rwandese Vanished to install a Puppet Regime Funded by Impoverished Ugandans!Blood shed Continues on a Daily Basis! But Nobody is bound to Free Ugandans from their Chains when they are Comfortable with Them..

  4. Oh yes , thats right: this typical was Natasha “forcing” her parents to read what she wanted them to read.
Not many Ugandans may know that in Mr. Museveni`s house , its Natasha( the rebel) who calls the shots. She is the only woman in the House that refused to have that presidential, first-lady- haircut .She freely does stuff with her hair.
Its like an order that all Museveni`s “women” must look like his wife. Short hair . Specioza Wandira , Kasule Lumumba, Nakyobe , Amelia Kyambadde, Gen-Nalweyiso, Anita Among ,Robinah Nabbanja etc etc.
If Natasha tells Mr.Museveni to read it , he will read it. End.

      1. Chief , a person`s outward mannerism is usually a reflection of that person`s inner distinctive nature or character.
Mr. Museveni said it himself that he doesn`t like or respect Uganda women who come with “Indian hair”. He then added that in his house only Patience choses her own way and keeps her hair long or plaited.( the girls that went to Namagunga with her will confirm that she choses her own way)

There is evidence that almost all women that Mr.Museveni associates with follow his hair instructions , except Natasha

You will have to pardon me if I determine that if this daughter wants her parents to read something , they will read it.

      2. Yes we can. Why ? Because a person`s outward mannerisms are usually reflective of that person`s inner distinctive nature.

        1. Did you see him entering ?

Are you sure that when he entered he did not escape through the window like Ambassador Birigwa Wasswa when they shut the door?
(Please go read COLLAPSE by Jared Diamond about rulers and their take on religion- it is a whole chapter that will teach you that this whole thing of Mr. Museveni and having a pastor daughter is a scam)

  5. Regardless of whether or not the “apology” was sincere ( which I do not believe it was) there is something to learn from the re-action it generated: the people of Uganda , especially the ones that Mr.Museveni has hurt most , do not need his money , do not need his “peace”, do not care about his “sacrifice”; all that most Ugandans need and expect from Mr. Museveni , his wife , his family is that HE COMES BACK TO EARTH and BE HUMAN.His Godly attitude is just an illusion that must come to some end. That end is what most Ugandans are waiting for.
Personally, the impression I got is that most Ugandans are prepared to forgive him and move on as long as he honestly accepts that he has made lots of mistakes , hurt a lot of people , hurt the country , devided the people and made them hopeless and angry.
If Mr and Mrs Museveni took a moment and paid a little attention to how most Ugandans reacted to their “apology” maybe these two would get it.
Knowning what I know , Mr.Museveni is unlikely to get it even in the next 77 years.

  6. Ooooooooooh! This is why the militant Gen. Muhoozi K M7 skipped the apology session, “Thus, as he [M7} was reading the apology at Kololo, Ugandans were being tortured in his son’s basement, as others were being abducted off the streets.”

    1. There was a story I ran across sometime back…A mutooro couple once settled in a neighborhood and at night he beat a blanket while his wife was screaming to simulate domestic violence…no one came to intervene so he shifted the very next day…moral of the story, if you are surrounded by weird people, then it is advisable to relocate or make new and better friends…

How can you be abducted in broad daylight when you are surrounded by your “friends” and “neighbors” ?

10 people come to a neighborhood of 200 people and abduct one of “their own” without informing local leaders ?

      How is that possible?

If you know it is illegal why let it happen?

To my understanding, only properly identifiable police have the right to arrest a person. So if you let them, goons, abduct “your people”, good luck tracing them…wabongose (you slept on the job-no amount of criticizing the government will bring them back because they were not abducted by criticism, people did it…)

We need to sober up and examine ourselves sincerely- have you ever seen Museveni or Muhoozi personally abducting an individual?

Have you ever heard or seen a security agent being punished for failing to abduct someone?

I advise all Ugandans to at least get to know the law relating to arrests and detentions and not just leave it there but to apply or force it’s application (you, me and others are on our own- lawyers and judges prefer career advancement to your wails, can you blame them… ?)

  7. Doc, “No wonder, it seemed rushed, incoherent, and not from the heart – with neither specifics nor signs of remorse.” The fact of the matter is, the truth is out there lingering all over the place and Patience and Natasha are running into it day in day out because, you can’t miss it. Leave alone the truth, the crimes M7, his family, relatives, tribesmen and militants have committed stinks to high heaven! So, Patience and Natasha want us to believe that they’re sorry, yet the facts clearly shows that they’re are not. If they were, then they would have asked their parents, M7 and Janet M7 to resign! That would show that Patience and Natasha really care and are concerned about their family’s crimes. None of the M7 family member is remorseful or even cares about the pain we’re going through. Deep down their heart(s), they believe that they own Uganda and we owe them an apology! Otherwise, that was an empty apology. Patience and Natasha clear know that. It didn’t came from neither M7’s heart nor Janet’s heart and neither Patience’s heart nor Natasha’s heart.

    1. I would like to differ on that.
1.Mr. Museveni whether you like it or not wants to die in power…he has no other alternative, even when he was in the earlier governments, he had no personal legacy to show…that thing of thinking he will resign is out…
      2. The biggest tragedy and betrayal is when yesterday’s “oppressed” becomes today’s “oppressor”, Obote 2 and Museveni is a case study…
      Gabalemye kwe teleza:
1.Look for, build up and promote an alternative, not successor; Uganda is not a monarchy.
      2. Learn how to cope in a country with two presidents because I can assure you even if Museveni gets 2% in the next election and Bobi wine gets 98%, Mr. Museveni will not resign- to do what ?
(Look at the case study of Vichy France under German occupation).
Splitting hairs on Mr. Museveni’s children is not the way to go(if Mr. Museveni was to die today, all these “power centres” would disappear faster than you would say “cow”-it is a house of cards).

  8. Doc, let the entire family go away. There’s is no such a thing as, “Ask the old man to spare some time – and a peaceful future – for his grand and great grandchildren. There is still a window to make amends.” What is there to amend? If at all Patience and Natasha cares that much, then let them publicly come out and plead for their parents resignation.
