In Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18, the speaker tells us about the beauty and power of writing poetry (and building monuments) about those that we love: “So long as men can breathe or eyes can see/ So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.”
In these lines, and concrete structures, our loved ones, and heroes are immortalised. They continue to live amongst us. Successive generations find them alive – and give them life with their eyes and voice – through those lines and concrete structures.
In the build-up to the 2021 election, I gave an interview to NTV where I promised to fundraise for a monument in honour of Col Kizza Besigye should he decide not to stand in that election. He had won all his elections but had failed to take the seat at Plot I Nakasero.
My contention was that he needed to allow space for fresh blood. (I know, him and followers would be asking how he was stopping others). But in truth, his exit created the environment People Power needed to thrive. (People Power folks also tend to gloat that KB was already a spent force. But what do I know?)
Dr Besigye did not stand – and the challenge was on. But with Kampala becoming a killing zone in the course of that election (58 killed as per government own admission, and 300 from unconfirmed reports), there was no way our monument plans would be executed. This monument is a celebration and will begin in the peace times.
Presently, a deathly aura hoovers over Uganda’s skies. But in all fairness, Dr Besigye deserves many, many monuments. His face ought to be imprinted on our currency notes. All this will not be simply for deciding not to stand in the 2021 election. But for his overall politics: bravery, steadfastness and commitment for non-violence.
I know, the fruits of his struggles are difficult to count especially that we still live under a crippling Museveni autocracy. Indeed, reconstructing Uganda and taking back the country from Museveni’s white-capitalist backers will be an uphill task. (Taking back electricity supply and distribution from Umeme was telling enough).
But we need to appreciate what we have and as we continue to fight. Thanks to Dr Kizza Besigye, we should chasten ourselves with the understanding that had he made the wrong decisions – specifically violent opposition – it could have been worse.
It is too bad already, but there’s a hole Kizza Besigye has helped us avoid. I will say one more time: singlehandedly, Dr Kizza Besigye has kept Uganda together for the last 20 years. Not Museveni. Not his security agencies either.
Ironically, Museveni and his agencies have continued to provoke, tempt and bait Uganda into an armed response to their bad manners. Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s affront on NUP is an absolute provocation.
They seem to imagine that they have monopoly over violence. What is unknown to these dullards is that the oppressed often have power to determine the way they respond to their oppression. Consider the provocations in the violence that greeted the walk-to-work protests.
Or when Kizza Besigye was nearly blinded at Mulago roundabout. These were all dangerous provocations. But Kizza Besigye who has been the man to beat the drums of war has refused to do so. Even in the aftermaths of all those election provocations (especially 2006, 2011 and 2016) – where emotions were most high, the man refused to beat the war drums.
Dear reader, had Col Besigye decided to choose violence – as the diminutive candidate of the 1980 election did – he is more likely to have lost. Yes, he might never have won an armed protest against Yoweri Museveni (who is especially a darling to the Western world).
But considering his then cult stature, many people would have joined him or would have been sympathetic to this course of action. He would have lost, but even in loss, Uganda would not be the same.
It would have disintegrated: millions of people would have lost their lives, and a great deal of property and business would have been lost property and business would have been lost. To this end, when the right time comes, Ugandans will definitely give this man his flowers.
This will not just be for his struggles, but also for his choices in different moments of our country – and inspiration. Despite all provocation, it is arguable that Bobi Wine is desisting from taking the course of a violent response, because he remains inspired by Kizza Besigye.
It is not really cowardice – as many have noted about Bobi Wine – but no one loves war except folks in Museveni’s inner circle. As I noted sometimes back, as Kizza Besigye continues behind bars, Museveni’s surrogates will never convince the country that such a man, with a history of absolute non-violence, when most haggard and frail, finally found courage for armed struggle.
It is a rubbish gamble. It does not even meet the level of nonsense. I have been asked about potential locations for Col Kizza Besigye’s monument. Where should this poetry be written?
I have two grounds in mind: Makerere University’s Freedom Square, and the yard in the parliamentary grounds. Future students at the country’s leading public university ought to be intrigued about this man and should ask questions about him and seek to learn about him.
Future parliamentarians – of course, after the house becomes smaller – ought to be reminded about this man every single day of their existence in that house. They ought to beware of the sacrifices Kizza Besigye made without direct benefit, and without political office. Our contribution to the country can even be more impactful even without holding any office. Thank you, Dr Besigye – we will be forever grateful.

The author is a political theorist

Indeed Dr KB deserves a monument and even more. Yes I agree with you that Bobi wine is inspired by KB, but KB led very impactful protests yet the Bobi’s demonised him for standing four times and losing, then claiming there is no democracy in Uganda , remember? I do not know How many times Bobi wine will stand and lose to realise there is no democracy in Uganda, but KB remains above them all towering like a political colossus
Naboma, I thought that I’m alone to this belief. Thank you for coming out and repeat the same words I have consistently written in these columns.
Kyagulanyi’s statement clearly shows that his interest was vested in replacing Besigye as the leading opposing figure, and making NUP the leading opposition party in parliament. Once Kyagulanyi accomplished that, we’re back to business as usual. To be exact, we’re in the worst position than ever before because, all hope for change is gone. Not only that Kyagulanyi blamed Besigye for standing 4 times and lost to M7, but said that there’s democracy in Uganda and it works! Lubongoya, Kyagulanyi’s right hand man, calls it the “democratic space.”
M7 killed about 300 innocent Ugandans in Nov 2020, due to bogus and violent elections. Over 3,000 innocent people are still held in torture chambers. Besigye and hajji Lutale are detained on trumped up charges. To Kyagulanyi, that’s democracy at work. And Lubongoya says that, we’re enjoying the democratic space.
Say what you will, Besigye is the true revolutionary that we need. Yes, he made some mistakes. However, he is on record to have said that elections are not the answer for change in Uganda. That’s why he has led several nonviolent means like walk to work and other protests. That is why he is the most persecuted political figure and M7 fears the most.
The fact of the matter is, we should abandon bogus and violent elections and focus on nonviolent means. Certainly, if M7 continues to use violent to nonviolent means, then we must defend ourselves with any means that’s provided under the constitution.
{Bobi wine is inspired by KB, but KB led very impactful protests yet the Bobi’s demonised him for standing four times and losing, then claiming there is no democracy in Uganda, I do not know How many times Bobi wine will stand and lose to realise there is no democracy in Uganda,…}
Naboma, thanks.
Reason Ugandans MUST NOT GO for next useless elections that will only reassure, reaffirm, protect Rwandese Museveni’s 45 years legally, officially, constitutionally!
Power for change then putting in place the kind of government Ugandans want is in their hands, but only in UNITY, without armed war, as the war victimes will only be Ugandans!
Why is Museveni assured of lifetime rule, knowing only his son will replace him when he dies of old age finally, while Ugandans fight one another for this & that & for what reason?
Akot, my dearest, twagirwa omuyaye! In 4 years ever since omuyaye challenge M7 in 2021 bogus and violent elections, Ugandans, mostly the youths, have fled the country like never before, due to desperation. All hope for change is gone due to Kyagulanyi’s love for making money in bogus and violent elections.
Thanks Dr., Dr. Yusuf.
But watch out with your suggestion of “many Dr. KB’s monuments”!
This is because e.g., by erecting his own monument in front of the Kabamba Military Barrack in Mubende District and moreover in his lifetime, our 84-years-old “Problem of Africa”, Gen Tibuhaburwa committed Hubris. That is; in order to be worshiped like God its the abomination of self-immortalization in a monument, which is contrary to the 2nd Commandment of the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:4).
In other words, intoxicated with political power, our “Problem of Africa” and his son Gen Kainerugaba Muhoozi are now under the illusion of becoming God; with the power of the lifes and deaths of Ugandan in their hands.
And therefore, will never take kindly your suggestion of competing monuments of the Dr. Kiiza Besigye of this country (I am a jealous God. Thou shalt not have any other gods apart from me.
E.g., while in Gen Muhoozi’s basement and after his beard had been shaven clean and learning Runyankole; wasn’t Eddy Mutwe subjected to bowing before the image (life-size Photographs) of Mr. and Mrs. M7 before he was given breakfast?
Seeing is believing! Obsessed with being worshiped (self-importance and attention), specially after opening the reconstructed burnt-down Main Building/Hall sometime last year; go to Makerere University. Months after months this fellows put up a 5×10 feet Billboard size of their IMAGE (photograph) right in front of the Main Hall, so that; whoever passes in front of that building would do a Match-pass (worshiped)
Another REMINDER IMAGE is right in front of the round-about as soon as one entered the Main Gate.
In other words, haunted by their background and therefore obsessed with life-presidency the so call first family guys and girls want to be mummified and fossilized in our State House.
Wachireba idol worshipers?
Youre conflating issues, Lakwena.
Every nation has its heroes who ought to be immortalized in the story of a nation. Not to be worshipped but remembered, honoured, and taught as examples to the younger generation.
The family however has demanded worship, most vividly seen from the actions of the son. Thats unholy.
His a lucky man he will be remembered and studied years to come…if you want yo live forever be on the right side of history….and for Ugandans who are struggling don’t lose hope nothing lasts for ever….i don’t know but i think the center seem not to hold….don’t know weather you remember 1985 whan obote called all officers from the rank of majors at Nile mansions try to rise they salaries few month the okelloes took over….i don’t know but being observing from far something is not right with the junta…in kenya the last elections Railas daughter said that whan you see people calling for pressers you know they have lost..true but the father lost she spoke soon…but whan you see dictators gathering military officers iko kitu…prey for you guys…Americans say How Do You SLEEP AT NIGHT…am asking you guys how do you sleep at night
This article is all about NRM diehard hot air. Modern countries democratic as they may be, it is government responsibility to arrange democratic and peaceful free and fair national elections that are not violent, that are not rigged, that are free of Gerrymandering. Elections that are continuously not free and fair and filled up with inhuman behaviour(not civilized) are non recognisable. The city lawyer Male Mabirizi most probably could try to light a torch into the national election turmoil these Uganda money greedy politicians are playing about with the ever suffering electorate of this poor African country of Uganda. Such national elections would not at all be legitimate internationally where AK45 is pointed directly at the innocent electorate! How can this long serving African government organise such biased and rigged national elections when it led a civil war on the well recognised international democratic principal of free and fair elections. Genuine democratic elections are the peoples’ collective expression of sovereignty and an inalienable right of citizens. These precepts are recognized in national constitutions the world over and in international human rights instruments of the United Nations, regional intergovernmental organizations and other bodies. The Universal Declaration of Global Principles for non-partisan elections states clearly the international guide lines to follow in respect of universal human rights as elections are arranged. This business of Besigye and Kyagulanyi playing the heroes over the crimes of NRM government in its miserable failure to organise international well recognised national elections now 40 years and counting is very unfortunate indeed! The African Kingdom state of Buganda is not going to continue to participate in such Uganda national elections which are not up to international standards.
This comment comes from the book of delusion. Face the reality. We dont live in the utopia that you fantasize about and worst still, claim to exist world over.
The world is ruled by strong men. Strong business interests. Those who fight that tyranny like Kizza Besigye should be honoured.
The nation of Buganda you push, i will have you know is ruled by large land owners, very wealthy men that have a vested interest in the continuation of the status quo.
Nice article. The shmucks at parliament( present and future) are not deserving of KB. His monument out to be at some of the major roundabouts, & at constitutional square.
