Oftentimes, Museveni’s surrogates love to humour the country with one-minute clips of their old man pacing briskly ahead of everybody else.
His bodyguards and flabby NRM supporters would be seen running as they try to catch up with him. They will then boisterously caption that one-minute clip – it is never 10 minutes, and will never be – that their octogenarian is still physically fit to lead.
That they make his physical fitness as one of the points with which they sell their candidate is a telling sign that the old man is past his sale-by date. The younger members of his security detail jogging to catch up with him are simply being polite. If they chose to outpace him, he cannot surely compete – and might have him embarrassed.
But even if we took the contention that Museveni is still physically fit and can brisk-walk well, our cryptocurrency, TikTok and AI-powered world is pacing a thousand times faster. It is only in herding animals in pastoral societies that practices never change, but the modern world is something else.
Iran just out-bombed Israel without putting a single soldier inside enemy territory. And Uganda is selling “a walking champion” for president! Dear reader, if this man failed to transform Uganda into Kenya, Ethiopia or Zambia (don’t look too far) when he was 40, 50, 60 and 70 years of age, he cannot transform this country at 80.
They say age comes with wisdom, but old age is illness. It is not only a terminal illness that one starts staring at death in the face, but also that the world leaves grannies behind. They cannot catch up. If we may ask now: What REALLY does Museveni wish he can achieve at an advanced age of 82?
What is without question is that bwana Yoweri Museveni is not holding onto power so as to deliver anything to country. But, rather, holding onto the highest office in the land as guarantee against possible embarrassment. Because if he fully understands that Uganda will not fold after he has passed on, Museveni’s decision to stand again is a statement of both his fears and selfishness: “They’ll deal with anything arising after I’m gone.”
KAINERUGABA’S LONG WAIT
If deciding to wheel himself on to power was a heartbreaking to anyone, there is none more broken than his son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Now at 52, he will be 57 when the next election comes around. His father will be officially 87 – and if he still has breath in his body, he will choose to stand again.
That will force Muhoozi’s waiting to another five years. He will be 63 then. Not that he will be too old to compete for president, but there is nothing more painful than this type of waiting where you know you are too close, but too far – and have to ingratiate oneself to your old man, when you too have an immense amount of power in your hands. It is painful.
In fact, what has happened in return is that Muhoozi has decided to unleash his frustration with father on small chaps in the opposition.
I’m not sure at what point Muhoozi will understand that the stumbling block to his ascent to power – if these ambitions aren’t simply forced on him – is not Eddie Mutwe or Bobi Wine, but the man who actually seems to have empowered him in the first places: his father.
Because the old man excited his son in the last five years with supersonic promotions and privileges. He allowed him to go around country on politically tours dubbed birthday parties. He even formed a political mobilising unit, called PLU, with regional heads and handlers.
But that is all the furthest they could go. Indeed, to save himself from further embarrassment, he has had to painfully integrate some of his mid-range team members into his father’s cabinet. There was a time I used to encourage Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba to overthrow his father.
He seems to have ignored me, subjecting himself to a painful wait. He still has the chance to do it and will catapult himself into stardom. Although it looks like this tough-talking military officer is not tough at all.
His toughness is limited to smaller folks in the opposition. He seems to want power but only if given to him on a silver platter from a man who seems not to trust him enough.
A NERVOUS STATE
In deciding to stand again for the presidency, Museveni plunged the country deeper into a nervous condition. We have been living on the edge already, but the man has now signed us for another gruelling five years of absolute uncertainty and nervousness.
Of course, he will be declared winner of this election and will have the majority in parliament. The problem now is not that he cannot deliver on anything, but that he has decided to die in office.
And our future is now tied around his life – and all units of governments have to fight to protect the man’s life. Indeed, this election cycle – which is purely a circus – will bring even more violence and brutality than we witnessed in 2021.
Many young people will be picked and jailed for simply supporting opposition folks, and many others will lose their lives as happened in 2021. Interestingly, even Museveni does not trust elections for the uncertainty that comes with them – because they challenge him and surrogates to be more brutal and ruthless.
While only Museveni can dislodge himself, this costly and deadly circus called elections has to happen since we signed up to a neoliberal modernity. Kitalo nnyo.

Iran out-bombed Israel without doing what……..???
How did I miss that !!!!
What I and probably the rest of heads saw was Israel taking over Iran air-space , picking and taking out all selected targets at will ,eliminating the Supreme Leaders inner-circle within days . From his hide out , and as bombs were raining down on his creations , Ayatollah , said ” there is nothing to see here..”( haha) Dr. Sserunkuma seems to have heard the man….
It is so easy to blame Mr.Museveni for overstaying and running out of ideas ; but what about those of us who have also run out of stories to tell -week and after week ?
If you say something about Iran that may be far from the truth , how can you end your story by talking about ” election circus” ?
Are you not part of the fake news circus ?
NB; fake news is all about giving false misleading information ,disinformation, propaganda m hoaxes etc.
Jes, to be fair to Doc, the truth hurts. It’s not fake news or even close to giving false misleading information, not at all, dear. This is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, “this costly and deadly circus called elections” has happened since M7 captured our nation by means of the gun and violence. Bogus and violent elections every 5 years is a costly and deadly circus called elections!
Jes, you’re are paying attention to Iran and Israel war, yet it was only mentioned in the passing. It’s called obiter dicta [dictum] or by the way.
Jes, pay attention to details. We’re in a quagmire! It’s a vicious cycle and indeed a costly and deadly circus called elections.
Kyagulanyi and NUP have made it worse, because, Gen. Muhoozi M7 is even expressing himself freely! He abducts at will. He tortures at will. And he kills at will. That he’ll behead Kyagulanyi and hand Besigye! Like father like son.
What is our leading opposition figure and his leading opposition party, NUP, doing? Urging the nation, “get IDs, go to costly and deadly circus called elections, and leave the rest to Kyagulanyi!”
Where have you been not to notice that the list of Generals published by the main stream media of the Generals killed are all alive and we’re the ones coordinating the bombing of Israel. Switch to other sources of news other than CNN and BBC you will be liberated in the mind.
“Iran just out-bombed Israel …” I never saw this victorious act. Yusuf’s knee-jerk and prejudicial comment as an admirer of the Islamic Republic of Iran surprises me.
Tendo, you’re not different from Jes. Iran v Israel is not the issue here. Ugandan is. Mentioning Iran was a by the way. Surprisingly it caught you attention, thus making it a big deal! The issue of theme is, “The problem is not M7 failing to deliver, but dying in office.” Not only has M7 failed to deliver, but he is going to die in office because he set a trap and made politics a business in which people make money instead of serving the nation. So, instead of uniting the nation under one objective of getting rid of M7 and bring change to Uganda, Kyagulanyi and others are only interested in being the leading opposition leader and NUP being the largest opposition party in parliament! That’s why M7 is bound to die in office. Not because you “never this victory act.” Assuming you did, then what?
Remase Bwana , with all due respect , I think you need to improve your scope of argument. You seem to be stuck in one gear and can`t get out of it.
Look. I can assure you that I know something about “obiter dicta” , but I wonder if YOU know that a premise sometimes precedes the formation of a percepective / a conclusion.
You ask me to pay attention , but do YOU pay attention ?
Had you cared to read what I wrote , you would have noticed that I used Dr. Sserunkuma`s own Iran vs Israel (baised?) remark as a premise to question his sense of correctness in regard to the whole article , especially its conclusion.
My point is that if you are going to play with words , well knowing that what you are saying cannot pass a fact -check , why should I believe you too are not in the circus business ?
I don`t know what your profession is ; but I can tell you that in mine , one exaggeration costs plenty credibility.
As I have said many times before , we are all in this circus together. When you point a finger..take a good look at your own fist.
Certainly, I’m “stuck in one gear,” because as a nation, we’re stuck in “this costly and deadly circus called elections.” I can’t swift to another gear because there’re no hope for change in sight. We’re stuck in a quagmire!
Regrettably, there’s no end in sight because, ever since Kyagulanyi came on the political scene to challenge M7, change has completely vanished out of our sight. That is what the last para of the article is all about. We’re in a state of despair to the extent that Gen. Muhoozi K M7 is at liberty to do as he pleases and/or violating all manners of human rights with impunity [just like M7]!
Meanwhile, Kyagulanyi and his NUP are focusing on making money out of bogus and violent elections, which led Dr. Sserunkuma to conclude, “While only Museveni can dislodge himself, this costly and deadly circus called elections has to happen since we signed up to a neoliberal modernity. Kitalo nnyo.”
M7, his family, relatives, tribesmen and militants have killed more innocent people ever since Kyagulanyi challenged M7 than all those killed in previous bogus and violent elections combined!
That excludes those who’re missing! Then there’re over 3,000 who were detained since Nov 2020 and still rotting in torture chambers! Not counting Olivia Lutaya and others who were forced to plead guilty to crimes they never committed!
Jes, based on the aforesaid, are things getting better or worse? While you’re still on that, how could we go to the next polls while those [political prisoners] held in torture chambers since Nov 2020 are still being persecuted?
How would l swift gears while those who’re missing since Nov 2020 are unaccountable for, yet nothing has changed but getting worse each and everyday?
Jes, my question is, what happened to “people power, our power?”
I start with answering your last question : if “people power ” was none existent, there would be no need for your employersto abduct , torture and detain political opponents. There would be no need for YOU to be obsessed with Kyagulanyi,. There would be no need for an 84 year old Mr.Museveni to behave like he`s just arrived from the Gheto. There would be no job for the likes of Hajat.Namyalo & co. going around with sacks of money to buy love for Mr.Museveni.
How and why do you send 50 armoured vehicles , 700 armed men and women , spend 4 billion in a Kawempe byi-election if there is no opposing “power” to handle ?!
Now Bwana Remase , I am sure that you must be good at something; but reasoning well is not it. I want to respect you , but I must say that you exhibit random bouts of intellectual immaturity. Sad !!!
Surely , by now , you should have known that you have made your point. According to you , elections are only about violence and making money. Those who have not heard you by now will never hear you even if you stood on top of Sheraton Hotel and yelled it out. At this point , there should be no need to keep on repeating yourself.
Only YOU , see some logic behind endlessly fighting something or somebody who ( in your mind) is already exposed.
Someone said :
When fisherment cannot go to the sea, they repair their nets. When the sea is too rough , the smart ones don`t sit and wait; they mend their nets , sharpen their tools and prepare for the moment the storm breaks.
Even in the stillness ,there should be progress. Its not about sitting idle; its about building for what next
I am thinking that this is most probably why people like Mr.Sserunkuma keeps on writing . I suppose he is articles are about repairing , or mending nets , or sharpening his tools in preperation for what next.
I notice that he has written a bit about King Solomon`s death and how his cadres did not realize he was gone. This time , he writes about the innevitable and the confusion that may follow. There is no question that we are right in the middle of a storm, which is the obviously expired Captain has decided to go down with it, like the other one of the Taitanic. My view then is that Dr.Sserunkuma`s article is prediction in that direction.
My thinking then is : why should it be only Dr. Sserunkuma, contemplating and preparing for the moment when the storm breaks ?
This “bogus ” ” circus” called elections , is it not also about young people preparing nets for what next ?
If it is , why shouldn`t I let them do what they have chosen to do ? Why should I be the one to torch their net
If I have better ideas, my nets my tools , who has stopped ME from preparing , sharpening or even putting them to good use ?
MK rampant abductions ?!?
Has nobody ever told him that while many NRA bush fighters and supporters lost their lives , this it did not stop his father from achieving his ultimate goal ?
What makes anyone think that there can be a struggle without casualties ?
In this bloody storm ; you can stay in your bed and get killed by a heap of garbage; you can be Eddie Mutwe, hang out with foot soldiers and be tortured for it. You can earn a living as a double agent propandandist; you can also pretent to be a member of the opposion for a fee .
We are all in this BS together .
Well, I have failed to make anything out of the above comment, however, two wrongs don’t make it right. Simply because “NRA bush fighters and supporters lost their lives,” but this “did not stop M7 from achieving his ultimate goal,” doesn’t mean that Kyagulanyi/NUP should continue making money out of bogus and violent elections simply because M7 achieved his ultimate goal of capturing our state through deceit that he was bringing change. M7 took us [nation] to the Luwero bush war to bring change, however, change never came. We’re worse off than before that bush war, just like we’re worse off now than before Kyagulanyi came on the political scene to challenge M7 and make money out of bogus and violent elections, which is a costly and deadly circus called elections!
Jes, we can’t keep recycling costly and deadly circus called elections simply because Kyagulanyi achieved his ultimate goal of making money out of bogus and violent elections.
Am I surprised that YOU have “failed to make anything out of “my comment ?
Nop !!!
This is very typical of you .
You are the one who dropped in the obiter dicto concept , but then , you do not seem to understand how it is applied.
The other day , I refered to Pelosi vs Trump as a “by the way” ; you confused it for a comparision between democratic USA and dictatorial Uganda.
When you said that MK abducts and tortures at will , and then implied the opposition is to blame for it, my response was that if you are in a struggle , and you intend to achieve your goal , you must move forward even when things get tough.
It goes without saying that your role as a double -agent , is to try , try and try to demoraize those who are trying to prepare for what next.
I am not sure you are succeeding . otherwise , you would not need to write the same things over and over again .
Jes, how could a speaker of the house be compared to the president? I mean, your comment came after my comment about our beloved useless LoP, Ssenyonyi. So, you can spin it in any way you like, the fact remains the same, apples are not oranges. Uganda is a shithole country without neither democracy nor rule of law. That is why bogus and violent elections are costly and deadly circus called elections. That isn’t the case in the US.
Could tell me meaningful accomplishment Ssenyonyi [or Mpuuga] has ever made to give us hope that change is in sight and bogus and violent elections will cease to be costly and deadly circus called elections.
Jes, in other wards, you’re happy that since Kyagulanyi came on the political scene with people power in order to make money and further embolden M7, his family, relatives, tribesmen and militants to kinap, torture, kill and/or persecute innocent Ugandans with impunity, right? Correct me if I’m wrong, people power means that it’s the people who have the power and dictate what they need and deserve, including but not limited to, holding M7 and company accountable for violation of human rights and rule of law, isn’t it? However, in five years of Kyagulanyi’s leadership of the opposition, no accountability but worst of all Kyagulanyi is more interested in this costly and deadly circus called elections in order to make money, right?
Yes , I can correct you Sir !
I said it less than 24 hours ago that Uganda finds itself in a storm , nad that we are all rolling in the same BS. Did you read that ?
Tell me now , how saying that makes me “happy” ?
You dear are also in circus in case you do not realize it. Every time you allage that so and so joined politics to make money , you end up proving that you too are repeating charges for money.i.e , that you are planted here as one of many of the Ringmaster`s diversionary illusionists. Is it working ….?
The only difference is that your circus performance lacks new tricks. You keep on and pulling your rabbit out of your hat . Its a yawn.
Jes, if that is true, and it is true, how does doing the same thing over and over again yield different results?
YOU Sir are the answer to your own great question.
END .
Jes, I hope and pray that, you’ll realize that you [Kyagulanyi/NUP] are part of the problem not the solution. Con you imagine that Muhoozi has the balls to, not only abdact Kyagulanyi’s right hand man, Mutwe, tortured him and also taught him Lunyankole, but also threatened to behaed Kyagulanyi! However, it’s business as usual, and all Kyagulanyi cares about is, next bogus and violent elections, with clear knowledge that, this is costly and deadly circus called elections.
By the way, do you know Mawa or Wooden K by any chance?
