NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi with party officials and supporters

I was once robbed at a travelling market. Well, not exactly robbed – because I was a willing participant – but I was fleeced of my money at a travelling market when I played that gambling game, kano kakyamu, kano katuufu (This one is wrong, this one is correct).

You know that game where they flip cards and you have to guess the right one by placing your money on top of the card with the possible right flowers? (They mostly looked like flowers). Once you got it right, the gambler doubles the amount you deposited on the said card.

On that fateful day, I bet twice and ended emptying my pockets at once. All my bets were wrong. I must have been about thirteen, and had been sent to buy myself a pair of socks for school was beginning next Monday. As the gambler pocketed my money, I tried to grab his hand, wailing and telling the world he was a thief.

No one believed me because no one had invited me to his stand. I would learn later that those whom I had seen beating the gambler – guessing the right card correctly and winning – weren’t really random players; they were part of the set. They were baits that caught unsuspecting folk into trying it out.

But the chief gambler always wins because the game is rigged from the beginning. More recently, I overheard a boda rider rebuke his friends whether they really believed “Omuyindi would come from wherever he came to set up a betting hall to make you rich? Idiots!” he had concluded.

I was once that idiot, and now I perfectly understand that in gambling, the gambler-in- chief always wins. The understanding that this game is rigged from the beginning has never left me. And this is the image I have when I think about elections under autocratic governments – or maybe specifically elections in Museveni’s Uganda.

The game is rigged from the beginning, but th entire country, like a pack of countryfolk, will want to play to compete and beat the gambler-in-chief. Every season – after five years – we are bated into playing this game.

There are folks who actually appear to beat the chief gambler – at different levels: local councils, parliament, and others. While these winners are not necessarily set up by the gambler-in-chief, after their ‘victories’, they are soon given roles in this painful script. But at the end of the day, only for the country to end up in an even deeper sinkhole.

These ‘winners,’ who tend to become the opposition, become the next set of baits that ensure continuity of the game on when they next appear in town. But as the wananchi conclude the game, we shall be crying our way back home.

The cycle is repeated on the following season, in the same square, and same format and new unsuspecting folks are robbed. There is no recourse for complaint because the market appears once a month, and when it next appears, there are often many new players – except the gamblers and snake charmers.

The carnival of Akatale k’omubuulo

If you have never attended akatale k’omubuulo, like folks born in major cities and town, where markers are more permanent, I need to paint a picture for you. It is often a carnival atmosphere. There are circus performers, magicians and snake charmers. There are tricksters and gamblers.

There are gazers – folks shopping with only their eyes. And there are thieves and pickpockets. Music would be blaring in one corner, and if you are lucky, there could be an open or closed dance party, ekikiri, as darkness arrives – going late into the night.

For a villager – which is most folks in Kampala, newcomers to these electoral things – this atmosphere is confusing. It is a mixture of market and entertainment. You have to guess not just the right product, but what exactly took you to that market. There are merchants selling legit products, many selling fake ones or simply stolen from elsewhere.

You cannot miss this image of politicians making all sorts of promises in Uganda’s politics. Some of these promises are simply wild, and others are achievable. And the entire election atmosphere actually feels like akatale k’omubuulo. Everybody is here.

Thieves, snake charmers, tricksters, and all of them are shouting at the top of their voices, claiming to have a legitimate business or legitimate products. In truth, the majority are thieves. Since the snake charmers and tricksters tend to deceptively grab the biggest crowds, these are often the kings of the market squares. They never lose.

It is funny how these two elected to work in the same corner. The snake charmer empowers you with his magic charms, and the trickster robes you of your hard-earned income. Look, I am not against travelling markets.

The problem is that once robbed – or sold a fake product – the victim has nowhere to complain because the market will only return the following month and might have entirely new sellers.

The day I was robbed, as my father was lashing me for being stupid, I considered returning the next month to burn down that entire market. No wonder, the more societies grow, travelling markets simply disappear.

  1. ” I would learn later that those whom I saw beating the gambler.. weren´t really random players; they were part of the set”
    Very well said !
The same can be said about our political experts, analysist, theorists, talk show pundits, columnists , commentors, know-it-all elites , etc. Many of them are snake charmers ,, scare-mongers , part of the whole freaking set.

    1. Mr. Serunkuma Yusuf, not everyone understands parables, just say – “Bano ba “Kyaali” Bali tuwudisa…
      Majority of the “politicians”/”leaders” are, I dare say 🤡 clowns, just look around;
      1. One clown is accusing the other of being sleepy yet in his backyard of…people were hacked to death like mangoes and the culprits have never been brought to book, the clowns who lost their loved ones are quiet-still tolerating the “zaala”.

      2. It is more “profitable ” to be an underdog in Uganda’s (clowntopia) “politics”. Mr. Mao, having got his ministerial appointment, once said something along the lines of “…if Mr. Museveni was the problem of Uganda, then why not get someone to remove him…” please check the archives if you dispute this…maybe he got tired of the “clown politics” of “politicians” saying MUSEVENI MUST GO while not doing anything serious to kick him out…

      My prediction for the 2026 presidential election, after witnessing the clowns in the youth elections;
      Mr. Museveni declared “winner”

      Your Ugandan 🤡 clown

  2. Doc, in the recent Observer, Ssemakadde wrote about declining the chief of hardcore organized criminal, Owiny Dollo’s appointment of Ssemakadde on the Law Reform Committee, and I wondered why Ssemakadde contradicted himself by strongly recommending “our most perpendicular ULS vice president, Anthony Asiimwe,” to the LRC in his stead.
This is the reason why I have brought up Ssemakadde’s article, “While these winners are not necessarily set up by the gambler-in-chief, after their ‘victories’, they are soon given roles in this painful script. But at the end of the day, only for the country to end up in an even deeper sinkhole.” In M7’s 40 years of autocracy we’re sinking into deeper and deeper shithole everyday, and people like Ssemakadde are soon given roles [which he passed over to his ULS vice-president] in this painful script.
While these winners, like our beloved LoP, Ssenyonyi, are not necessarily set up by the gambler-in-chief, they are eagerly happy to be given roles in this painful script, with clear knowledge that at the end of the day, the country will end up in an even deeper shithole.

  3. Nancy Pelosi was Speaker when Trump was first elected.
From day One , Nancy rejected Trump`s presidency ,called him an imposter and compared him to Hitler. But she attended all meetings with him in the White House and all the 4 State of the Nation speeches Trump gave ( tore one of them to pieces)
    I
    Was Nancy contradicting herself ?
    Not to me !

    1. Jes, don’t compare apples and oranges to be the same, simply because they’re both fruits, which are round in shape and green in color.
The US has had 8 presidents since 1986 when M7 captured our state by means of the gun and violence. Regan, Bush (1), Clinton, Bush (2), Obama, Trump, Biden and Trump. Uganda has only one president, M7, for 40 years now! Is that what you’re talking about Nancy Pelosi attending all meeting with Trump whom she called an impostor?
Jes, that clearly shows that you [and NUP] believe that M7 wins elections and is a legitimate president. That’s inferred from the fact that despite the fact that Pelosi called Trump an impostor, she recognised him as a legitimate president who was elected by the American people. So, she was compelled and/or obliged to “attend all meetings with him in the White House and all the 4 State of the Nation speeches Trump gave ( tore one of them to pieces).”
Jes, that’s what is called democracy and/or rule of law, which Uganda doesn’t have, in order for you to compare our beloved LoP, Senyonyi with Pelosi. Uganda and America and totally two different countries. US is the most developed nation on the planet [due to its democracy and rule of law], yet Uganda is a shithole country because of M7’s autocracy for 40 years and still counting.

  4. Bwana Remase , sometimes , I am tempted to think that you may have a comprehension problem.
Look : a reference does not tantamount to a comparison . It is common knowledge that references should be considered in abstraction of the historical context in which they are raised.
Thus , I gave Nancy vs Trump as a reference-a sample of how one can register a ( personal ) protest and still exercise official their right to attend / participate.

” .. despite that fact that Pelosi called Trump an imposter, she recognized him as a legitimate president who was elected by American people ” you say.
    EXACTLY MY POINT !
She called him an IMPOSTER , and then RECOGNISED him as the elected President .
Remember: an imposter is someone who pretends to be what they are not with an intent to deceive and defraud.
If I were you , having criticized people like Ssemakadde , I would go ahead and wonder how and why one can “recognize ” an “imposter” as the elected President.
Shall we talk about contradictions now….?
BTW: Nancy has never accepted that Trump was elected by American people; she said he was put there by Putin/ Russia

  5. Remase again , there is something else I do not understand about you. You`ve got this horrible habit of making up narratives that have no basis .( or have they)!
For example you say : “Jes, that clearly shows that you ( and NUP) M7 wins elections and is a legitimate president”
When and where did I imply let alone say that ? Have I talked about NUP ? Has NUP said that ?
Luckily for me , I believe that are people here who can read and follow what we put here. I think they have a pretty good idea who stands where and why.

    1. Jes, pay attention to details. I clearly stated that it is inferred that when you compare Pelosi calling Trump an impostor but at the same time she attended meetings with him and all 4 state of the union address by Trump, that means that Pelosi did not contradicting herself. I agree, however, Ssenyonyi [and/or NUP] claim that “eya wangula si yaffuga” or M7 rigged Kyagulanyi out, which means that Ssenyonyi doesn’t recognize M7 as the winner of 2021 bogus and violent elections. However, you [NUP] and Ssenyonyo legitimize M7 by being given a role as LoP in this painful script, with clear knowledge that at the end of the day, only for the country to end up in an even deeper shithole.

  6. Jes, I hate to tell you that you’re either confused or don’t know what you’re talking about or both. Based on your comment, you claim that Pelosi “rejected Trump`s presidency, called him an imposter and compared him to Hitler.” “But she attended all meetings with him in the White House and all the 4 State of the Nation speeches Trump gave (tore one of them to pieces).” Collect me if I’m wrong, you’re comparing Senyonyi as LoP to Pelosi as speaker of the House at the time. In other words, even though Pelosi called Trump an impostor, she nevertheless attended meetings with him in the white house and/or all the 4 state of the union address by Trump, isn’t it? So, you’re responding to my comment that Ssenyonyi, as LoP, is also like Pelosi, because he is one of the winners, who are not necessarily set up by the gambler-in-chief, but he is eagerly happy to be given a role in this painful script, yet he clearly knows that at the end of the day, the country will end up in an even deeper shithole, isn’t it?

    1. As I said ,its up to those who read our comments to decide which one of us is confused.
I will repeat , never have I mentioned Hon. Ssenyonyi . Its YOU who keeps on and on bringing up his name . I think I know why.
Get it : I am not “comparing” Lop Ssenyonyi with Pelosi. We are talking about Mr.Ssemakadde , who you accuse of contradicting himself.
Pelosi reference is supposed to educate you Mister !
According to you , she did NOT contradict herself when she spotted an “imposter” and had issues with him , but still accepted his presidency .
If you believe that , then you should understand why Ssemakadde chose a representative . You have totally failed to understand that Mr.Ssemakadde has no issues with the Office of Chief Justice and all its associated branches ; his problem is the persons that occupy these positions, their rampant abuse of power and how the law needs to be reformed.

      1. Furthermore, like I said, you cant compare America to Uganda. You keep repeating that ssemakadde didn’t contradict himself, yet he called Dollo a tyrant in a country without democracy for 40 years and still counting! Mbu, because of the struggle, right?! Pelosi never passed over her appointment as speaker to another person, as you seem to suggest. For your information, Newt Gingrich called Bill Clinton “Slick Willie.” He also attended all the state of the union address by Clinton, because there’s democracy and rule of law in America, which is not the case in Uganda. So, it remains the same. Nothing will change even if Sseamakadde’s vice president is appointed in his stead.

        1. Read my comment above 11 times. If you cannot understand what I have said , I have nothing else to add .
          Cheers !

      2. Jes, you could run to the readers all you want, however, you cant change the fact that even if you claim that you didn’t make comparisons between Pelosi and Ssenyonyi, but talking about Ssemakadde’s passing over his appointment to his vice president, mbu because Pelosi attended all the state of union address by Trump, yet she called him an impostor. Pelosi is a US Congress woman and Speaker and never left her country for exile due to persecution or tyrany, but Ssemakadde is a lawyer and ULS president in exile due to persecution and tyrany of Dollo and M7. Remember, Dollo is one of those judges who touched our constitution and uplifted the age limits to make M7 a life president. So, how will the appointment of Ssemakadde’s vice president to the law reform committee bring change to a rotten to the core system, without neithet democracy nor rule of law?
Jes, be truthful for once, do you really expect a miracle that the appointment of Ssemakadde’s vice president to LRC will bring change to Uganda to be under rule of law, and/or stop violence and corruption, or stop M7 from rigging elections?
Jes, you [NUP] and Kyagulanyi are giving Ugandans false hope that change will come through bogus and violent elections or the so called law reform committee made by Dollo, whom Ssemakadde correctly and rightly calls a tyrant.
        Indeed, buli omu asibba kiwanyi!
        You’re really good at it.

  7. Jes, you didn’t need to mention Ssenyonyi, the moment to cited Pelosi after I said that Ssenyonyi as LoP is completely useless and/or meaningless because, he is one of the winners, who are not necessarily set up by the gambler-in-chief, but he is eagerly happy to be given a role in this painful script, yet he clearly knows that at the end of the day, the country will end up in an even deeper shithole.
The fact of the matter is, you’re good at “okusibba ekiwanyi, ” just like Kyagulanyi. In the 2021 bogus and violent elections he told us, “Get IDs, go and vote and leave the rest to me.” Now, the same Kyagulanyi is tell us that the 2026 bogus and violent elections would be a “protest vote.” Kyagulanyi clearly knows that he can’t win a hardcore organized criminal, M7, in bogus and violent elections. All he cares about is to make money and get winners like Ssenyonyi, who are not necessarily set up by the gambler-in-chief, but eagerly happy to be given a role in this painful script, yet he clearly knows that at the end of the day, the country will end up in an even deeper shithole. Uganda is in a deeper shithole than before Kyagulanyi challenged M7 in 2021 bogus and violent election. What pains the most is, Kyagulanyi doesn’t know whether he is coming or going. Totally confused!
