The international break is over and the StarTimes Uganda Premier League is back, with the early-season race already offering a glimpse of a battle between ambitious challengers and the established giants.

BUL FC return to action as table leaders after an impressive four-match winning streak, a run that has given the Jinja-based side an early advantage over traditional contenders.

But with KCCA FC, Vipers SC, SC Villa, Kitara FC, Express FC and URA FC all looking to find rhythm, the pressure is on the chasing pack to close the gap. Four matches open the programme today, October 7, spread across the Eastern, Western and Central regions.

At Police Arena, Kira Road, Ntungasaze FC host Mbarara City FC in a meeting of sides looking to establish themselves in the early weeks of the campaign. Mbarara City’s coaching situation remains under discussion, with Francis Mugerwa yet to formally seal his position amid reports linking Sam Ssimbwa with the job.

At Bukedea Comprehensive School, Kataka FC host SC Villa after their request to play in Mbale was not granted. SC Villa will have to adjust without David Lukwago, Godfrey Lubangakane and Frank Ssebufu, who have been with the Uganda Cranes during the recent international assignments.

In Lukwago’s absence, new signing Hassan Matovu is expected to take up the Jogoos’ goalkeeping duties. In Hoima, Kitara FC face Kigezi Homeboys at Hoima City Stadium, with the fixture carrying added significance for the hosts.

Kitara are preparing for a major Caf Confederation Cup assignment against Egyptian giants Al Ahly next week, making the league encounter an opportunity to sharpen their competitive edge.

Thursday (October 8) brings another big test when Vipers SC travel to face Blacks Power at Hoima City stadium. The reigning champions are looking to steadily rebuild momentum in their title defence while keeping alive their ambition of returning to continental football.

At Lugogo, NEC FC host Express FC. Friday brings two more fixtures at Nakivubo, with Entebbe UPPC facing Police FC before URA FC take on KCCA FC at 8pm. The round closes on Sunday when UPDF host BUL FC at Nakivubo. For BUL, it is another chance to show their four-match winning streak is more than a flying start. For the traditional giants, the chase begins again.
