A total of 12 locally- based basketball players began preparations for the Afro-basket qualifiers this week.
The Afro-basket is Africa’s showpiece basketball championship whose qualifiers start in March. However, coach Mandy Juruni will be sweating over the fitness of his star shooting-guard, Jimmy Enabu.
Enabu, who turns out for the four-time National Basketball League champions City Oilers played with a niggling knee problem for much of last season. It kept him out of the earlier week exertions.
Enabu was only able to be part of the group on Wednesday. Juruni will hope that his presence is extended even further.
Enabu, is arguably the best player in the country today. And as he showed, when he captained Oilers to the Fiba Zone Five Championship last October, and to the defence of their 2015 league title, his drives, shots and dribbling make him an invaluable asset to the Silverbacks’ cause.
Veterans Stephen Omony, Norman Blick and Henry Malinga are part of the squad. They bring in huge experience.
