For the second successive weekend, Buzz Pirates slaughtered a giant at Legends Rugby Club.

Boby Musinguzi’s charges followed up their 18-12 win over last year’s winners Betway Kobs with a 20-13 win over champions elect Hima Cement Heathens Friday evening.

The win, a result that reflects how the Pirates’ season has been, should send a strong message to the so-called giants of the league, according to scrumhalf Conrad Wanyama.

“We will be deadly next season. Mark my word,” Wanyama, whose boot has decided some games for the Legends side,” told The Observer after the team’s win on Friday.

Wanyama’s captain Marvin Odong believes the team is reaping from hard work, trusting each other and the hunger to succeed having sat in the shadow of Kobs and Heathens for long.

The team has relied on the blend of experience and the new kids on the block to stamp their authority in each and every game. Veteran Denis Etuket, Odong and fly half Ivan Magomu have ably helped the youngsters rub shoulders with the established players.

With only two rounds of games left on card for Kobs, it is unlikely that they will catch up with Musinguzi’s charges and restore normalcy in the standings.

The two games left for Kobs are both at home to Kyadondo sides Heathens and Toyota Buffaloes while Pirates are only left with Rams. On 60 points now, Pirates trail the champions elect and they are ahead of third-placed Kobs by eight points.

The last time Kobs finished outside the top two was in the 2003 season when the league was still played in a cup format. They lost to Rhinos in the semifinal.

POTENTIAL

At the start of the season, all the attention was on Shell Rimula Rhinos to try and destabilize the status quo, and not much attention was paid to Pirates.

And, if the win over Rhinos didn’t deliver the message, the two victories over Kobs and Heathens represent the sort of respect the youthful side deserves.

Full back Timothy Kisiga, wingers Baron Kasozi and Raymond Emanzi have all impressed in their first season in the top flight and promise to make Pirates a much stronger force next season.
