Four years after France ended Morocco’s fairy- tale run at the 2022 Fifa World Cup, the two nations meet again on football’s biggest stage with another place in the semifinals at stake.
Thursday (July 9) night’s quarterfinal is more than a battle between two of the tournament’s best teams. It is an opportunity for Morocco to avenge the painful 2-0 semi- final defeat in Qatar, while France aim to keep alive their bid to reclaim the World Cup crown.
That defeat did little to diminish Morocco’s remarkable achievement. The Atlas Lions became the first African nation to reach a World Cup semi- final, earning global admiration for their disciplined defending, tactical organisation and fearless approach against the world’s elite.
Now they are back, and perhaps even stronger. Coach Mohamed Ouahbi’s men arrive full of confidence after a commanding 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada in the round-of-16. Midfielder Azzedine Ounahi was the star of the show with two goals before substitute Soufiane Rahimi completed the scoring, as Morocco became the first African nation to reach consecutive World Cup quarterfinals.
France, meanwhile, have quietly gone about their business with the efficiency expected of former champions. Didier Deschamps’ side edged Paraguay 1-0 thanks to a coolly converted Kylian Mbappe penalty, extending their reputation as one of the tournament’s most balanced teams.
History slightly favours Les Bleus. In six previous meetings, France have won four times, Morocco once, while one match ended in a draw. Their most memorable encounter remains the 2022 World Cup semi- final, when goals from Theo Hernandez and Randal Kolo Muani ended Morocco’s dream of becoming the first African finalists.
Morocco’s hopes once again rest on captain Achraf Hakimi, whose energy at both ends of the pitch makes him one of the world’s finest full-backs. Ounahi enters the contest in outstanding form, while Ismael Saibari’s creativity and movement could prove crucial if Morocco are to trouble the French defence.
France, however, possess arguably the tournament’s most devastating attacking weapon in Mbappe. With Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise supplying pace, flair and creativity, Deschamps has assembled an attack capable of unsettling even the most organised defence.
The tactical battle could decide the outcome. Morocco are expected to defend in numbers, frustrate France and strike on the counterattack, while France will seek to dominate possession and use the speed of their forwards to stretch the Atlas Lions’ disciplined back line.
Beyond the football, this is a contest loaded with emotion and significance. Morocco carry the hopes of Africa once again and the chance to erase the memories of 2022. France, meanwhile, are chasing another World Cup title and know that underestimating this resilient Moroccan side would be a costly mistake.
With revenge, history and a place in the semi-finals all on the line, this promises to be one of the defining matches of the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
