The same applies to top players who ended their careers in the top-flight without lifting the trophy. The list is long, but just read on
FRED MUKASA
He joined Express FC from Nile FC in 1982. The pacy winger who was tagged ‘Gaso’ had a good camaraderie with Issa Sekatawa, helping the latter emerge league top goal scorer on two occasions (1982 and 1983). Mukasa, on his side, failed to win the title in seven top-level years at Express. His move to Coffee in 1989 also proved futile.
RICHARD MUGALU
He moved from Express to Coffee in 1981, and a few years later, became The Cranes undisputed left-back. In the 12 years the towering defender spent at the Bugolobi-based side, he never lifted the league trophy up to his retirement in 1993.
LEO ADRAA
He joined Nsambya FC from Ggaba Junior Seminary in 1972 and became a permanent fixture for the Zebras. The marksman, renowned for his powerful feet, retired in 1988 without touching the league trophy.
IBRAHIM BUWEMBO
The flying winger had stints with both State House FC and Express FC until 1988, when he switched to Coffee FC. But his seven years at the Coffee Curers yielded nothing, and not even crossing over to Simba FC in 1996 saved his thirst for the league trophy.
LIVINGSTONE MBABAZI
The talented midfielder featured for the three VEK clubs (SC Villa, Express, and KCCA FC), but due to his nomadism, he never won a league title. He left SC Villa after the 1997 season, and the club won the league the following year (1998). He then moved to Express in 1998 and KCCA in 1999; on both occasions, the two clubs did not deliver the league trophy.
SAM KABUGO
The solid centre half played most of his top-flight football for Nsambya FC, where he spent 12 years without winning the league trophy. His switch to Express in 1994 did not go as planned and he retired from football in 1995.
DENIS OBUA
It’s almost unbelievable that the legendary winger did not win a league title in all the nine years he spent at Police FC. And his two years at the Maroons (1977–1978) earned him nothing. He retired in 1983 after sustaining gun-shot injuries in Kamwokya.
IBRAHIM KIZITO
He was a top prospect upon joining KCCA FC from Spear Motors in 1992, but he never won the league. Even when he joined Uganda Electricity Board (UEB) FC in 1994, he emerged as the league top scorer in1995 with 20 goals with no silverware.
His crossing to SC Villa and, later Express FC, did not yield a league title.
GODFREY WALUSIMBI
The solid left fullback popularly known as Jajja Walu might have registered some success at Gor Mahia but never won the local league title during his stay at SC Villa (2007– 2011) and Vipers SC (2011–2014).
FRED KAJOBA
He moved to Coffee in 1988 from Pepsi FC and became their first-choice custodian two years later. But despite his outstanding displays for the seven years at the club, he never tasted league glory. His move to Simba FC in 1996 all but ended his quest for league success.
PHILLIP MUSOKE
Express fans tagged him Maradona because of his slick movements and dribbling style; however, the talented forward did not win the league during his eight-year stay at the Wankulukuku-based club between 1982 and 1990. He relocated to the UK in 1990, where he has stayed to date.
BARNABAS MWESIGA
The left winger spent the entire 1970s playing for Nsambya FC. Despite playing alongside top players like John Baptist Semanobe, Alifunsi Mukanga, Patrick Sebuyungo and Leo Adraa, among others, Mwesiga and Nsambya never laid their hands on the prestigious league trophy.
The temperamental winger also had stints at Mbarara and Kilembe but never even got closer to the silverware.
