The Crested Cranes begin their 2028 Caf Women’s Olympic Qualifying campaign on Thursday, October 8 with a stern test against Zambia at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.
Uganda hosts the first leg at 4 pm, with the return match scheduled for October 13 in Zambia, making a positive home result particularly important for the senior women’s national team.
The Crested Cranes squad includes five foreign-based players who have been part of the preparations for this fixture. They include goalkeeper Karungi Vanessa Edith of Brøndby IF Women, Nankya Shadia (HAC Féminines Women FC), Fazila Ikwaput (East Bengal WFC), Sylvia Kabene (Mġarr United Women FC) and Laki Otandeka (Coamo FC).
Their arrival takes the number of foreign-based players in camp to eight, alongside Ruth Aturo and Zainah Nandede of Simba Queens FC and Joan Nabirye of Yanga Princess FC. Otandeka’s return adds an intriguing subplot.
The Coamo FC forward is back in the national team setup after five years away and is eager to make the reunion count.
“It feels good to be back after five years,” Otandeka said, praising the team’s welcoming environment and demanding preparations.
The forward has also called on supporters to fill Nakivubo, with Fufa confirming free entrance for the crucial first leg. For the Crested Cranes, the objective is clear: make home advantage count before heading to Zambia.
