The life of an athlete thrives on securing as many races to improve on their individual skill.

But at the same time, finding purpose in running, is of overriding significance. It is that significance that Abel Chebet, 32, a native of Kapchorwa district, found in taking part in the Coffee Marathon last weekend in Ntungamo district.

Abel Chebet, winner of the Half Marathon

Organized under the auspices of Inspire Africa Group, Chebet raced to victory in the 21km half-marathon. In the process, he bagged a jackpot of Shs 5m, which he said would boost him greatly to achieve a lot more in the near future.

Chebet said: “I cannot be more grateful for the opportunity to compete in this event. First, it was well organized. But then, more importantly, the money I won, is going to help me prepare for the Brazil marathon next month. At least now, I can eat a balanced diet as I prepare.”

In addition, Chebet, feeling quite sentimental about his feat, noted that he has to buy a piece of land off this money for remembrance of the Coffee marathon, 2025.

“Also, my children can comfortably return to school. This money is a big boost to me,” Chebet said.

For Chebet, this success did not come as a surprise. In January, he won the Gulu City marathon, which he followed up with another triumph in the Mbarara City marathon in March.

In February, Chebet finished second in the national cross-country event in Tororo, but won the 10000 metres race in the national trials, held at Namboole stadium in April. There were several other winners on Saturday, May 24, including Isaac Masai in the 42kms. He bagged a prize of Shs 10m, as did Uganda’s 2018 Commonwealth 10000 metres bronze medalist, Mercyline Chelangat. She also took home Shs 10m.
