Some of the golfers who turned up

The inaugural Serena Captain’s Putter Golf Tournament, held at Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, attracted more than 100 golfers, exceeding expectations for the competition.

The turnout brought together golfers on the lush greens of the Kigo course, set against the resort’s picturesque Lake Victoria shoreline.

Beyond providing a platform for competitive golf, business networking and community engagement, the tournament, organised and sponsored by dfcu bank, has a broader ambition: supporting the development of junior and professional golf in Uganda.

Held on September 27, the inaugural tournament also inspired a club-wide equipment drive, through which proceeds were used to provide golf clubs, shoes and accessories to caddies, helping expand access to the sport.

The tournament was championed by Jimmy Mugerwa, board chairman of dfcu Limited and captain of Serena Golf Club. It was conceived as an event that celebrates the spirit of golf while bringing together the leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals shaping Uganda’s future, with golf increasingly becoming part of the country’s sporting and business landscape.

A case in point is Ronald Rugumayo, currently one of Uganda’s leading golfers. Through steady progress and competing on different golf courses across the country, Rugumayo has emerged as an international trailblazer, flying Uganda’s flag on the global stage.

Rugumayo and a handful of other golfers have demonstrated that Uganda can produce talent capable of competing internationally. Initiatives such as the Captain’s Putter could help nurture the next generation by widening access to equipment, creating opportunities for emerging players and strengthening the country’s golfing ecosystem.
