On December 9, Airtel Uganda held a draw for sports journalists where 22 of them won various prizes in the Tulumbe Afcon promotion.

The three-week campaign is open to the public with the aim of boosting The Cranes at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon. On the sidelines, Elly Kyeyune caught up with Airtel’s acting marketing director, NELLIE BEYENDEZA-MWANDHA, who explained that it is a win-win situation for everyone.

What is Tulumbe Afcon all about?

It is a continuation Airtel has decided to do after the success of Mujje Tulumbe. We want to rally the citizens, football fans and Airtel customers behind The Cranes as they prepare for the Nations Cup. In the process, we are also giving back to our customers.

So, that’s why we’ve asked people to opt in [it is optional], we don’t want to impose it on anyone.

How many people are you taking to Afcon?

First of all, this is a festive season, a time of giving. We are taking six fans for an all-expenses-paid trip to Gabon to cheer The Cranes. There are actually three tickets to be won but the winners will have the option of taking a person of their choice.

You see, football is interesting when you are next to someone you can relate with and everything will be fully paid for the successful customers. Meanwhile, there will be a weekly draw every Tuesday on television where we will give out five smart televisions, 10 smart phones, one iPhone 6 plus on top of the ticket to Gabon.  The promo ends on January 13.

Explain the criteria.

Everyone is a winner. Dial *162# and then opt in. We are giving each of our customers a target and they will be aiming to recharge towards the target. Airtel is giving them three days within which to hit their target and once one does succeed, he/she will instantly get 100 per cent bonus. That is even before the main draw. It’s a win-win situation.

This is a unique promotion and we have broken it down to data, sms and airtime. It’s a three-in-one combo. I would really like to encourage everyone to recharge because there is no disappointment. We are trying to make sure that everyone is happy in this promo and no one goes away empty-handed.

What is your outlook of Ugandan football beyond Afcon?

Ugandans are really passionate people towards football and the sky is the limit to what Airtel can do for them as well as The Cranes. We have quite a number of activations lined up because we also have World Cup qualifiers coming up as well as several other matches.

Airtel is going to stand with them [The Cranes] in all ways much as we know there may be bad and good days on the pitch.
