The Electoral Commission (EC) has nominated three candidates on the first day of nominations for the Kalangala District Woman MP by-election.

The candidates are seeking to fill the vacancy left by the death of former Woman MP Helen Nakimuli. She died on April 19, 2026, at Alexandra Medical Centre in Kampala, shortly after securing re-election for a second term in Parliament.

She died at the age of 40 following an unsuccessful surgical procedure. EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the nomination exercise proceeded smoothly.

Those successfully nominated are Aidah Nabayiga of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Irene Nampala of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), and independent candidate Flavia Nagawa.

He urged all remaining aspirants to comply with nomination requirements and electoral laws to avoid unnecessary disruptions.

“The Electoral Commission appeals to all those seeking nomination to follow the commission’s guidelines, complete their nomination forms accurately, and ensure all legal requirements are met,” he added.

After the close of nominations, the Electoral Commission is expected to meet all successfully nominated candidates and their agents to agree on campaign schedules and guidelines.

Mucunguzi said campaign activities would then commence in accordance with the electoral roadmap issued by the commission.

The Electoral Commission has also emphasised the need for peaceful campaigns, urging candidates, supporters and political parties to comply with electoral laws and maintain harmony throughout the electoral process.
