Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the death of Peter Kaluya, a resident of Bulubude village in Malongo sub-county, Mayuge district, following post-election violence.
The suspects Abdullah Mateeka, Karim Kiwanuka, Jamiru Opili, Yasin Tibiita, Halima Nabirye, and Aisha Mutesi are currently detained at Mayuge Central police station on charges of murder and attempted murder.
According to police, the violence broke out after Tuesday’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) village structure elections, in which Isaac Lwakala was declared winner over his rival Khuzaima Wante.
Supporters of Wante reportedly turned violent, assaulting the presiding officer and seizing the declaration forms. Kaluya, who was among bystanders that helped the presiding officer escape the mob, became a target of the enraged crowd and was severely beaten.
He died while being rushed to Iganga General Hospital. Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the arrests, stating that detectives have gathered evidence implicating the suspects.

Thats one the cores and values of NRM, they started by killing people in Luwero, Gulu<Pader Kasese, all those places
This violence in a village election?? That we are willing to commit capital crimes over a village election? Now what awaits the much conveted representation at district and parliamentary level? I think this is why our president thinks we are idiots.
And by the way, this, at village level, at the moment, is just a party representation ticket at that!
You see, whereas security person did not even fire a single tear gas canister in the name of quelling violence, they instead do all the force and macho to peaceful gatherings of non-yellow parties. So you see how one can brood their mischievous child while casting the disciplined ones of the neighbors. Should we clap? Should we hypothetically find every reason to follow that narrative? Is this helping society forward?
But what’s more telling, you see this trend of violence and murder, and then also see how the police and prisons are mass-recruiting more heads ahead of the ultimate race.
So you see where the thing is pointing? I agree with you in that …
In other words, who in his/her right state of mind can still deny that from its Genesis, the NRM and its leadership is a party of killers, by killers and for killers. That is how and why its Chairman, our 80-years-old “Problem of Africa” is haunted by the December 1980 General Election so intolerant that he can kill whoever challenges him
It is now about 40 years now and NRM is still being blamed for not being able to process peacefully Pan African democratic elections at the Presidential, Constituency and Village levels. If you cannot manage to organise peaceful elections in your own party, how can you believe that NRM as a long serving government will act and respect the people’s decisions to choose their proper leadership throughout this country? Especially where NRM continously blames the Opposition and arrests them for everything that is going wrong in national elections. Such violent behaviour seems to be the consequences of commercialising NRM national elections and the party’s dictatorship. National elections are violent and rigged. They are not free and fair. It is unfortunate indeed that politics in this poor African country is the only flourishing and profitable business availble.
