Political analyst and former intelligence chief Charles Rwomushana has been released by security, a day after he was kidnapped from a live radio programme at Radio Simba in Kampala.
Rwomushana was taken into custody on Saturday shortly after the start of the station’s current affairs programme, Gasimbagane N’ebanamawulire, which began at 10:00 am.
Witnesses at the station said several armed men dressed in civilian clothes, accompanied by armed UPDF soldiers, surrounded the building, ordered staff to remain in place and forced their way into the studio where Rwomushana was on air.
The men reportedly confiscated his phones before taking him away. Dick Nvule, the programme host, said Rwomushana called him after his release and confirmed that he had been freed, but did not disclose where he had been held or the reason for his arrest.
“We have been trying to know his whereabouts, but he called me this morning [Monday] and told me that they released him last night, but he did not tell me where he was being held or the offences against him,” Nvule said.
Rwomushana could not be reached by the time of publication, while efforts to obtain an official explanation from security agencies over his arrest and release were unsuccessful.
Calls to UPDF spokesperson Col Chris Magezi and police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke went unanswered.
Rwomushana’s arrest came days after he used the same programme to comment on reports of an alleged power struggle within the First Family involving Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and his brother-in-law, Odrek Rwabwogo.
A former head of political intelligence at State House, Rwomushana is a regular political commentator and has previously been arrested on several occasions.
In July 2020, he was arrested outside NBS TV after appearing on a talk show and was accused of violating Covid-19 curfew restrictions.
In 2016, he was detained over social media posts linked to the disappearance of Christopher Aine, an aide to former presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi.
Rwomushana’s name has also recently resurfaced in court proceedings in the treason case involving Dr Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale.
Prosecution documents in that case allege that Rwomushana attended meetings in Brussels. However, he has not been formally charged in the case.
Who in his/her right state of mind can still deny that: the UPDF under the abduction, terror and murderous leadership of the Gen MK, has already deposed the Uganda Police (the IGP/constitution/treason)?
In other words, who in his/her right state of mind can still deny that: our 86-years-old PROBLEM OF AFRICA, Gen Tibuhaburwa and son are now the most insecure and terrified father and son in the whole, wide world (www)?
In their lifetime and the 45 years and counting in false political power, they have made so many personal enemies so much so that; they pervert their personal crimes, guilt, insecurity and terror into national insecurity. And therefore, resorted to state orchestrated terrorism such as: the current spate of abduction, torture in basement and outrageous malicious capital offences prosecution through FALSE POSITIVE/FACTS/prosecution evidences).
Or else, Rwomushana’s abduction and release without charges, is but part of the theatrics, to give the impression that; even the Rwomushana of Kanungu can be arbitrarily picked.
