A 33-year-old prison warder attached to Rukungiri Government Prison was shot dead in the early hours of Thursday for allegedly stealing a generator.
Lance Corporal Boniface Ojok was killed around 1:00 am at Babuuze Bar and Lodge in Kakabada A village, Rukungiri Municipality. He had been watching a football match with his colleagues before the incident.
After the match ended, Ojok reportedly handed his mobile phone to fellow prison warder James Otim and informed his colleagues that he was stepping out to answer nature’s call. While waiting for him outside the bar, they were startled by gunshots.
Upon rushing to the scene, they found Ojok lying dead in a pool of blood, with a generator beside him. Peter Byaruhanga, a 22-year-old private security guard attached to SWATT Security Limited and a resident of Kakabada A village, admitted to shooting Ojok. He claimed he had caught Ojok stealing the generator and opened fire.
Kigezi Region police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding Ojok’s death.

It is very bad indeed for a civil servant to loose his life in such a dodgy way. Such embarrassing incidents that depict the financial constraints in which these civil servants work, clearly should send a message to this long serving government about the dire financial situation they live in!
The poor guy did not deserve death for stealing a mere generator. If he was running away he could have been shot him in the leg to disable him but killing is not an excuse.
