Police has forwarded to the director of public prosecutions (DPP) a file containing the results of an investigation into the incident in which city businessman Ben Mugisha aka Bemuga shot and injured a man.
Bemuga is accused of attempting to murder Emmanuel Asiimwe after the latter found him with his girlfriend in Naalya, a Kampala suburb. Francis Obwana, the deputy director, Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Directorate (CIID) in charge of investigations, told The Observer the file was sent to DPP for legal advice.
He said Bemuga will appear in court when the DPP sanctions charges. Obwana added that Bemuga and his wife had earlier refused to record a statement at police, until the complainant raised the matter before Grace Akullo, the CIID director.
“When Bemuga became stubborn and refused to record the statement at a police post, we directed CIID commander for Kampala East to take over the matter,” he said. “After a directive was issued, Bemuga and his wife were summoned and they recorded statements.”
According to Asiimwe’s complaint, on November 26, at around 7pm, he went to visit his girlfriend, Jolly Mirembe Bora at her apartment in Naalya. He added that on arrival, he knocked on her door but she refused to open.
Asiimwe added that as he was still waiting, some relatives of Mirembe came and also knocked on the door. She opened and he entered the house.
On reaching the bedroom, he tried to switch on the light and a man he later learnt was Bemuga pulled his pistol and pointed it at his face, threatening to shoot.
A scuffle started and, according to Asiimwe, Bemuga hit him with the pistol. As a result, he started bleeding. He escaped and went to Naalya police post, where he opened an attempted murder case under file number SD REF 11/26/11/2016.
Efforts to reach Bemuga for his side of the story were futile as his known phone numbers were switched off by press time.
