With Christmas season upon us, police has issued tips for the public to ensure a peaceful and crime-free festive season.
Police says robberies tend to increase in urban areas as people move to villages to celebrate Christmas. Emilian Kayima, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, advised those who are going to travel upcountry not to leave their houses unattended.
“Before travelling, make sure you leave your home in safe hands of people you know. This helps police in case of any theft, to arrest suspects,” he said during a press briefing yesterday.
Kayima advised people to be very vigilant about the security of their vehicles, noting that once a car is stolen, the chances of recovering it are slim. Most stolen cars in Uganda are taken to countries like DR Congo, South Sudan and Tanzania. He advised car owners to install a GPS tracking systems, saying this will go a long way in securing their cars.
“The GPS [Global Positioning System] car-tracking device helps in monitoring and securing the vehicles. It informs the owner of the vehicle whoever touches it, and when they drive it without owner’s permission, it reaches a point and stops automatically,” he said.
Kayima advised business people to secure their premises during the festive season by installing CCTV cameras, security guards and avoiding moving with large sums of money which attracts criminals.
