Police has impounded a taxi and picked up a driver accused of ganging up with six others to rob travellers on Christmas day.
According to police, Andrew Lubowa and his accomplices changed the number plate of their vehicle from UAS 159F to UAE 869E and robbed travellers on various routes in the city.
Joseph Bakaleke, the Kampala Central divisional police commander, says the victims reported the matter to police, leading to a search for the suspects.
He said they intercepted Lubowa at Shoprite in Lugogo at 4am on Monday where he had knocked a fuel pump. On close examination of the vehicle, the officers saw the cellotape used to stick the fake number plates on the vehicle, leading to Lubowa’s arrest.
Bakaleke said the force was still hunting the remaining suspects who fled with the help of boda boda riders after convincing them that they were being chased because of driving permits.
However, Lubowa insisted that he was not part of the gang, saying he was only asked to drive the taxi. Sulait Kitaka, the officer in charge of Kampala Central police station, promised to follow the matter up until the the remaining culprits are apprehended.
