In a continued push to bolster both the morale and operational capacity of the Uganda Police Force, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, conducted an extensive inspection of the Police barracks at Nsambya on August 17.
During the tour, he commended police medical department for the service they extend to the civilian population that live around Nsambya barracks. He also outlined plans to improve welfare of police officers on top of revamping the schools within the facility.
Seeing how dilapidated the barracks look, he promised to improve accommodation on top of erecting a perimeter fence around it.
While the tour focused heavily on improving living conditions for officers, it was the IGP’s visit to the Police K9 Unit within that emerged as the centerpiece of the day. He drew high praise for the unit’s pivotal role in modern crime fighting.
Accompanied by senior officers such as AIGP Dr Moses Byaruhanga, the director of Health Services, and the undersecretary, Aggrey Wunyi, the IGP engaged directly with officers and their families residing at the facility.
He emphasised the strategic nature of the barracks, stating, “We assemble here to emphasize that Nsambya barracks is not merely a residential area; it is a strategic hub for personnel housing and deployment within Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP).”
He acknowledged the challenges facing the officers and reaffirmed the force’s commitment to immediate welfare interventions.
However, the focal point of the visit was the IGP’s tour of the K9 unit headquarters. Observing the training and breeding programs led by Commissioner of Police, Dr Martin Mugume, the IGP was impressed by the unit’s professionalism.
The K9 Unit has become increasingly indispensable to Ugandan security, providing critical support in detecting explosives and contraband that often elude standard equipment.
“The work being done here is not just impressive; it is essential,” Byakagaba stated during the inspection. “These highly trained dogs are on the frontline of our pursuit of justice. Their ability to prevent crime before it happens and assist in complex detections is a force multiplier that cannot be overstated.”
He commended the team for its outstanding dedication, noting that the unit significantly strengthens investigations and improves the quality of evidence presented in courts of law.
The IGP’s remarks highlight a broader strategy where specialized units like the K9 are being leveraged to address evolving threats, particularly as security forces face challenges involving explosive devices and sophisticated criminal networks.
The visit concluded with Byakagaba reiterating the force’s commitment to addressing the practical concerns raised by the barracks residents, ensuring that the welfare of officers matches the operational excellence expected of them.
