Police have shot dead a suspected armed robber during a foiled robbery at Asili fuel station in Maracha town council, Maracha district.
The incident occurred at about 7:40 pm on Monday at the fuel station in Buramali Cell, after three armed men reportedly attacked the facility at Nyadri trading centre.
Police said workers and nearby residents raised the alarm, prompting officers from the nearby Maracha district police headquarters to respond.
Josephine Angucia, the West Nile regional police spokesperson, said officers exchanged fire with the suspects as they attempted to shoot at police.
The deceased was reportedly armed with a submachine gun (SMG), which police recovered at the scene. Two other suspects escaped in an unknown direction.
The body of the deceased was taken to Maracha Hospital for identification by relatives.
Police have appealed for calm among residents and members of the business community as the search for the suspects continues. According to a security report, the suspected robbers are believed to be part of armed gangs operating between Arua and South Sudan.
