Proceeds from the upcoming Kampala Seven Hills run will go towards the refurbishment of city schools.
On Friday, National Social Security Fund (NSSF) launched the 21-kilometre event, slated for March 12, at Makerere University Primary School and organisers expect at least 1,000 participants.
Richard Byarugaba, the NSSF managing director, said a conducive schooling environment is crucial to the academic success of pupils. He said supporting the underprivileged was a noble cause and that NSSF would do that by partnering with KCCA to provide quality education.
“Results have come out proving that there is a strong correlation between the schools that have a good environment and performance. We need our children to be safe and healthy by creating a conducive environment,” Byarugaba said.
In the 2015 inaugural edition, NSSF collected Shs 65m but the Fund plans to collect Shs 200m from corporate entities. This money will be used to renovate Makerere Yellow, and Summit View primary school, and complete unfinished works at Nakivubo Settlement primary school.
Proceeds from last year’s run redeveloped Nakivubo Settlement primary school in Kisenyi and helped build a water facility at St Ponsiano Kyamula primary school in Makindye.
Jennifer Musisi, the KCCA executive director, commended NSSF support. “With partners like NSSF, we are confident that we will be able to improve all our schools and provide our children with the best learning environment they deserve,” she said.
