President Yoweri Museveni will attend the coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as Tooro king on September 29, state minister for Gender and Culture Mary Kamuli Kutesa has said.
Kutesa said preparations for the coronation at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City are progressing well and called on the people of Tooro and members of the public to attend the ceremony, which she described as a historic occasion for the kingdom.
Fr Charles Oyo, head of communications for the coronation organising committee, said the various committees are meeting regularly to finalise arrangements for the event.
He said the fundraising drive for the Shs 925 million required to finance the coronation is also progressing, with the committee receiving cash and in-kind contributions from individuals, companies and other well-wishers.
Oyo appealed to the people of Tooro and other supporters to continue contributing towards the coronation and prepare to participate in the celebrations.
Richard Rwabuhinga, head of protocol for the organising committee, said the ceremony is expected to attract leaders from traditional institutions in Uganda and abroad.
He said politicians, businesspeople, heads of diplomatic missions, distinguished guests and members of the public have also been invited.
Rukidi was selected as the new king of Tooro by a 21-member committee of the Babiito royal clan following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
