One of the victims of security brutality

Masaka Diocesan Bishop, Severus Jjumba, has criticized the Ugandan government for promoting patriotism while simultaneously allowing security forces to brutalize citizens.

While leading the Ash Wednesday mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Cathedral in Kitovu, Masaka City, Bishop Jjumba condemned the increasing violence by security operatives in the ongoing Kawempe North by-election campaigns, calling the trend “worrying and unacceptable.”

“It is foolhardy to preach patriotism to Ugandans while meting out brutality against them at the same time. Ugandans may soon lose it and start hating rather than love their country,” Jjumba stated.

He urged Christians to stand against human rights violations and dedicate the Lenten season to praying for security personnel, suggesting that their violent actions may indicate deeper mental or moral issues.

On Monday, chaos again erupted at the National Unity Platform (NUP) offices in Makerere Kavule when NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) and other party leaders led a procession to a rally for Elias Nalukoola, the NUP candidate for the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.

Masked operatives from the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce fired tear gas, beat up NUP supporters, and arrested 16 of them. The detainees were later remanded to Luzira prison on charges of obstruction, malicious damage, and causing a public nuisance. Several others sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.

Nalukoola himself was assaulted during his nomination and arrested, though he was later released without charge. Meanwhile, journalist Miracle Ibra continues to nurse an eye injury after being struck by an object thrown by security operatives.

With the Electoral Commission setting March 13 as polling day, there are growing fears that violence could escalate before and during the vote.

Bishop Mukasa calls for humility

In Kasana-Luwero Diocese, Bishop Lawrence Mukasa also used his Ash Wednesday message to urge Christians to embrace repentance and humility during Lent.

While leading mass at Our Lady of Fatima Queen of Peace Cathedral, Bishop Mukasa warned against hypocrisy, cautioning believers against committing the same sins while claiming to be fasting.

He also called on Catholics to pray for Pope Francis’ recovery from an acute respiratory illness so he can continue leading the Church. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and reflection leading up to Easter.

  1. Indeed security with hidden faces have an agenda not to be identified cos they are goons. This is not a high security mission like dealing with mafia gangsters where the lives of those security guys and their families should not be endangered should their identity be seen. Have you ever seen such deployment in NRM meetings or gatherings. So is always other political parties which never follow orders or the law and have trouble makers and are out to be in news. Please grow up

  2. Well for the Ganda tribes people, do not remind yourselves afterwards, that the Ganda royalists did not fore tell you! The royalists of the Kingdom state of Buganda have continuously been advising the Ganda fraternity not to continue to participate in NRM sponsored national elections. Up to now much of the public is aware that these so called national elections are not free and fair and wiser citizens must not waste their efforts and lifetime to attend to vote in such undemocratic spectacles. UNP want to participate in such violent elections not to politically unite the people of Uganda, but to make a bit of money for themselves until 2031! The Ancient Kingdom state of Buganda has had enough of such dodgy republican political ambitions.

  3. For Masaka Bishop Jjumba, the Christian lent of 40 years when at the end Jesus Christ was hit badly, whipped, he was spit at, tortured and later slaughtered on the cross with a capital punishment, signifies the atrocities constantly committed to fellow human beings by the so called human leadership of planet earth. Such human military atrocities of slaughter of Jesus about 2000 years ago, had nothing much to do with the common poor people of this world. They were only crying, sad and helpless spectators on the side of the road all the way to that punishment hill of Golgotha!

  4. Sorry for Bishop Jjumba: For Masaka Bishop Jjumba, the Christian lent of 40 years when at the end Jesus Christ was hit badly, whipped, he was spit at, tortured and later slaughtered: Spiritual Lent of 40 years can probably mean any lifetime of sins against God. In Christian theoretical terms of the Bible, the Lent season(springtime) is only 40 DAYS. Sorry about that.

  5. I will go on record and declare that I am 1111% for CHANGE ; I will support anybody who is willing to play a part in this difficult and tricky fight against a cruel and cunning dictator.
I have not only heard but listened to those who give their reason to pariticipate in an election they can win and yet lose . I have heard Dr.Besigye , Gen. Muntu , and Kyagulanyi saying that more than enough times. I chose to understand what they mean.
I am intelligent enough to know that you just cannot do nothing and expect results. I also know that there is no revolution without casualty. I therefore extend my total empathy to those that have been killed , tortured , jailed and brutalized , plus those who might face these things as the struggle continues.
I am open to and willing to hear from those who are opposed to the participation in the occasion of an election ( as a means to reach and deliver the massage of change to the public) what altanatives they have in case the opposition decides to not participate in NRM sponsored elections.
I totally reject this idea of discouraging something by offering nothing as an option.

Okey , you can have a go at NUP and even go as far as reaveling that they only in it to “make a bit of money for themselves ” ( as if some of these people do not know how to earn money through safer means) ; But I am going to ask : what do suggest, what is YOUR altanative PLAN ?
As usual , I am not holding my breath expecting an answer.

  6. “But I am going to ask : what do suggest, what is YOUR altanative PLAN ?
As usual , I am not holding my breath expecting an answer.” Actually Kent Mawa your questions can best be answered by the Ssabasajja Kabaka of Buganda and his honourable government. Because we as Ganda Royalists are fed up with being kicked in the a…… by anybody around! We too deserve decent lives to live in the Republican country of Uganda!

    1. Right !
I think I said that there is some evidence that Buganda has generally decided to not get bothered by how the central government does what it does . When Buganda realized that coffee farming is one of the best ways to fight poverty , it started its own ” emwanyi terimba ” campaign. When the selfish dictatorship noticed this , we all know how the industry was high-jacked . Buganda then put out a plan to build its own coffee processing and marketing industry , which is underway.
When Buganda noticed the lack of sufficient health centres for the poor , it put out a plan not only to raise funds to help out the sick that cannot afford it , but started building health centres where they are most needed.
A few days ago , Buganda started giving every Ggombola one tractor to help out local farmers with ploughing etc
But as this goes on , we are told that there is more than one way to skin a cat.
That is why , for me I am not opposed to those who use other means to make change happen. You will not hear me saying it is wrong to participate in elections ; you will not hear me accusing this one and that one that they are doing this and that for money. I just don´t know that. What I know is that 2 billion Uganda money is spent on one family every day. Thats what annoys me.
BWT: is this the first time Kabayekka calls himself a Ganda !
      I had no idea.
