A 21-year-old woman Zainab Mulungi has been arrested for allegedly killing and secretly burying her one-year-old daughter Hadija Kabawo.
Mulungi is suspected of burying the baby on Sunday, March 9 in Nalinaibi village in Kamuli district. Suspicion arose among neighbours and relatives when they noticed the child’s absence for two days.
When questioned about her daughter’s whereabouts, Mulungi claimed she had taken the child to the hospital and was going to check on her. According to reports, Mulungi left home on Tuesday and remained absent until Saturday, when she was arrested in Kamuli Municipality.
Michael Kasadha, Busoga North spokesperson, stated, “On Friday, March 14, 2025, at around 9:00 pm, family members noticed a foul smell, prompting them to search the area. They discovered a suspected grave and, after involving the local chairperson, confirmed it was the child’s burial site. The matter was then reported to the police.”
Investigations have revealed that Asuman Kabawo, the suspect’s husband, was away attending to his other home in Mbulamuti at the time of the incident. Before he left, the child had fallen ill, and both parents had sought medical attention.
Kabawo was later shocked to learn of the child’s death. A team of detectives visited the scene, recovered the body, and transported it to Kamuli General Hospital for a postmortem. Further investigations are ongoing to establish more details surrounding the incident. Kasadha commended the public for their vigilance and cooperation in promptly sharing information that led to the suspect’s arrest.
