Customers of the Buganda kingdom-owned K2 Telecom will start accessing expanded services through the larger Airtel telecom network after the two signed a brand endorsement agreement last week.

The services include; wider coverage, internet, 3G/4G network, Airtel Money, voice call packages, roaming and international services and value added services.

The agreement will require over 100,000 K2 Telecom customers to obtain new Airtel lines with the code 0708 and to ditch the K2 code 0730.

This comes as K2 moves to reposition itself within the industry having been closed down in May by Uganda Revenue Authority for failure to remit taxes of close to Shs 95 million.

The telecom has since its 2013 establishment been providing only voice and SMS services which couldn’t outcompete others giving data and mobile money.

At a press conference held in Bulange, Mengo outside Kampala, over the weekend, Airtel Managing Director VG Somasekhar and the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga heaped praises on the future prospects of the partnership which they said was successful given their working history.

“Through this partnership, we are giving back to the people of Buganda through provision of quality services and reviving the K2 brand so that Baganda continue to celebrate the kingdom with the backing of Airtel’s wide range of services and professional,” Somasekhar said.

Mayiga, while rallying users to embrace the partnership, said the kingdom chose Airtel because it’s ethical and transparent.

“I am pleased to announce to Buganda and Uganda that the Kingdom of Buganda has partnered Airtel Uganda to re-launch the K2 brand under the new code 0708…I urge all people in Buganda and Uganda to join K2 “eyaffe”, he said.
