Three Ugandan NGOs on Friday received a total of 6,700 Euros (Shs 25m) for various charitable causes.
The money was raised by the Irish Society, the Irish Embassy and Trócaire, an organisation linked to the Irish Catholic church.
During the maiden ‘charity of the year’ event at the Irish ambassador’s Residence in Kololo, cheques were handed over to Nurture Africa, On the Ball and the Moyo-based Sisters of the Sacred Heart. The organisations applied for funding, with each being selected “charity of the year”.
“When we saw what they intend to do with the money, it was a very easy decision”, said Irish Society secretary Adam Sweetman.
Nurture Africa said it would use its 3,000 Euros for buying an ultrasound-machine to diagnose pregnancy complications. It offers free health care for HIV/Aids-infected children and parents at a health center in Wakiso.
The Sisters of the Sacred Heart also got 3,000 Euros for furnishing an early childhood learning centre in Moyo. The centre will train nursery school teachers.
On the Ball received 700. According to director Karol Gallagher, the charity will use the money to train and equip game coaches and contribute to Ugandan development through football.
