Located in Wandengya, DGAL plays a critical role in Uganda’s scientific landscape, specializing in forensic, toxicological, human identification, firearms, environmental, and public health analyses. Renowned for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of testing and calibration processes across the country, DGAL’s ISO accreditation marks a significant milestone for both the laboratory and Uganda’s scientific community.

The ISO 17025 accreditation attests to DGAL’s technical proficiency, professionalism, and utilization of modern technologies in delivering reliable analytical results. By aligning with International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), DGAL sets new benchmarks for quality management systems in analytical services, fostering trust among local and international clients and positioning itself as a leader in the field.

Achieving ISO accreditation demands rigorous adherence to stringent evaluation criteria encompassing laboratory procedures, instrument precision, personnel competence, environmental conditions, and assessment by a competent accreditation body. DGAL underwent evaluation by the Kenyan Accreditation Services (KENAS), ensuring compliance with ISO standards.

This accreditation not only underscores DGAL’s commitment to excellence but also enhances its credibility and competitiveness in providing internationally accepted testing and calibration services. It has spurred increased confidence among clients, resulting in a surge in sample submissions and greater collaboration with science-based institutions such the Uganda National Bureau of Standards and the National Drug Authority.

Moreover, DGAL’s ISO accreditation is poised to yield positive economic impacts by enhancing the quality assurance of Uganda’s agricultural exports, particularly through the pesticide residue lab, thereby elevating the nation’s standing in the global market. Socially, the accreditation strengthens public trust in the laboratory’s scientific reports, particularly regarding DNA testing, facilitating justice and dispute resolution.

Jane Beebwa, principal government analyst overseeing the Quality Management System at DGAL, acknowledged the support from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the ministry of Internal Affairs, as well as the dedication of DGAL’s top management, in achieving this significant milestone.

With ISO accreditation, DGAL is primed to continue its pivotal role in advancing scientific excellence and contributing to Uganda’s socio-economic development.
