The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court has remanded four police officers to Luzira prison for allegedly robbing businessman John Vian Tumukunde of one kilogram of gold worth more than Shs 380 million.
The suspects; Detective Superintendent of Police James Besigye Kiguuya, Detective Corporals Simon Owona and Pracid Mulangira, and Monday Tibaijuka are all attached to the Flying Squad unit based at Kireka police barracks in Kira Municipality, Wakiso district.
They appeared before grade one magistrate Frank Namanya on Friday and were charged with aggravated robbery and conspiracy to commit a felony. Prosecution alleges that on May 9, 2025, at Solent Avenue in Nakawa Division, the accused officers, together with others still at large, robbed Tumukunde of gold valued at $105,000 (about Shs 380 million) and $1,000 in cash.
The officers are said to have used deadly weapons, including pistols and guns, to execute the robbery. The prosecution further alleges the group had conspired in advance to carry out the attack.
The accused were not allowed to plead to the charges since the offences are capital in nature and can only be tried by the High court. State attorney Odong Martin Awiny told court that investigations are still ongoing.
The suspects were remanded until June 12. Cases of gold-related fraud continue to rise in Uganda, with foreign investors being among the most affected. Security personnel, often in collusion with unscrupulous individuals posing as legal professionals, have been implicated in several high-value scams.
Some law firms accused of complicity insist they are only offering legal services within the confines of the law.

This is where our systems go wrong, when these not so intelligent fellows arrest other Ugandans, they dont allow them to be hooded or even use masks, the Magistrate should have ordered them to be exposed so that the public can identity them properly. These are real thieves in police uniform who use their power to kill, steal and destroy akin the evil himself. Imagine how Mukasa, Isabirye, Okello, Masaaba etc that they have robbed until they landed on a well connected Tumukunde with so many God fathers and mothers.
Wadada, where have you been? But don’t you see these are well fed and groomed criminals with shinny fingernails.
Go e.g., to Nsamby Police Barrack and you find shinny Range Rovers, Lexus, BWM etc. with the latest Registration Numbers plates, crookedly parked next to their rusty sigiri (Uniports).
In other words, if the Police sic members of the Flying Squad unit can do this (rob), and the UPDF (Uganda people’s destabilizing force) CDF, Gen MK abducts and torture innocent Ugandans in his basement and without fear of the legal consequences, announces and take personal responsibility.
He also makes others disappear or flee for their dear lives into other countries, such as: the Kakwenza, Dr. Danson Kahyana, Dr. Stella Nyanzi, etc. of this country, but never Court martialed; who in his/her right state of mind can still deny that: this is regime of terror and murder.
I.e., a regime of “organized criminals against humanity”; by criminals against humanity and for criminals against humanity. Therefore, there is nowhere to run and report to. To the extent that even the Courts may not help you, since some, if not most of the current Judges are now on temporary appointments.
Wachireba bashuma?
Armed and dangerous! Imagine there was a certain bill passed recently targeting those who ‘engage in military-related offences’. I am wondering why these guys are being tried in a civilian court while those wearing berets are tried in a court-martial, with its contradictions!
