Dr Robin Nandy presenting his credentials to minister John Mulimba

Last week, Nandy presented his credentials to Uganda’s minister of Foreign Affairs, John Mulimba, in Kampala. Nandy brings with him extensive experience in global health and development, having held leadership roles in countries like Iran, Indonesia, and India.

His expertise in immunization, child survival, and humanitarian response is expected to play a critical role in advancing Unicef’s mission to uphold children’s rights and support Uganda’s development initiatives.

Mulimba warmly welcomed Nandy, acknowledging Unicef’s steadfast partnership in promoting the health, education, and overall well-being of children in Uganda. He praised the longstanding cooperation between Uganda and Unicef, particularly in furthering development goals that prioritize the country’s children, who he referred to as the “bedrock of Uganda’s future.”

The minister also emphasized the importance of addressing emerging global challenges such as climate change and pandemics, which directly affect the welfare of children. He reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to working closely with Unicef to tackle these issues, while also focusing on pressing social challenges like teenage pregnancies and early marriages.

Mulimba called for a collaborative approach, underscoring the need for mindset shifts among Ugandans to achieve lasting progress. He expressed confidence that under Nandy’s leadership, Uganda-Unicef cooperation would strengthen and further the realization of key national development goals.

In his remarks, Nandy acknowledged the constraints posed by limited resources but emphasized that well-coordinated plans would attract funding and ensure the successful implementation of programs. He highlighted Unicef’s focus on fostering positive social and behavioural change, as well as strengthening community resilience, particularly in addressing the needs of Uganda’s most vulnerable children.
