The death toll from the Monday evening Kampala-Gulu highway accident has now risen to six.
The accident occurred at around 8:00 pm at Kapaburuuli in Migyeera town council, Nakasongola district.
Initially, four individuals, including three adult males and one juvenile male, were pronounced dead at the scene while eight others sustained severe injuries. However, two more victims today Tuesday succumbed to their injuries, raising the total fatalities to six.
The crash involved an Iveco trailer, registration number, SSD 797A/SSD 323, a Toyota Hiace commuter taxi, reg no. UBQ 356F, and a Toyota Premio reg no. UAX 554L. According to Savannah regional police spokesperson, Sam Twiineamazima, the trailer had stalled on the highway due to mechanical failure while facing towards Kampala.
The speeding taxi from the Gulu direction collided with the stationary trailer, causing it to overturn and hit an oncoming Premio from the Kampala side. Police quickly responded, evacuating the injured to Nakasongola health center IV for treatment. The bodies of the deceased were also taken to the same facility for autopsy. However, due to the worsening condition, the surviving injured have been referred to Mulago national referral hospital for advanced care.
“The condition of the injured is worsening, and they were referred to Mulago hospital,” Twiineamazima stated.
