Africano Nteziyaremye

Prominent Kisoro businessman Africano Nteziyaremye and his wife, Peace Kyompeire, were shot dead by gunmen at the gate of their home in Kisoro Municipality on Saturday night.

The couple was killed at around 11pm in Zindiro village, Northern Division. Residents said they were returning home in a double-cabin pickup truck after work at their wholesale shop, located opposite the Baby Coaches office along the road leading to Kisoro Mosque.

According to residents, assailants travelling on a motorcycle opened fire on the couple’s vehicle as it approached the gate. Both died at the scene.

Police officers rushed to the scene shortly after the shooting, cordoned off the area and deployed a canine unit to help track down the suspected gunmen.

On Sunday morning, officers led by Kisoro District Police Commander (DPC) Cosmus Edatu addressed mourners who had gathered at the couple’s home. At around 11am, police withdrew from the cordoned-off area, allowing residents and other mourners access to the home.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime later confirmed that no arrests had been made in connection with the killings. He said investigations were ongoing and security agencies were working to apprehend the suspects.

Tumushime appealed to members of the public with information that could help identify or trace the suspects to share it with police or other relevant authorities.

The killing comes amid a history of violent attacks targeting members of the business community in Kisoro district.

Last week, suspected gunmen reportedly attacked Bweza Lodge in Rushaga, Rubuguri Town Council, in what was believed to be an attempted robbery targeting tourists. The attack was reportedly foiled after guards at neighbouring Dorotia Lodge opened fire, forcing the assailants to flee.

In April 2025, a shop attendant identified as Kenneth Mucunguzi was shot and robbed of Shs 23 million in Muramba sub-county.

In October 2022, an Indian businessman, Patel Kuntaj, was shot dead by a police officer identified as Eliod Gumizamu inside his hardware shop in Kisoro municipality.

Earlier, in September 2014, businessman Dominique Ngirabanzi was shot by gunmen while opening his shop at Kisoro New Market.

    1. My heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Senseless violence must stop! No family should have to endure such pain and loss.

However, I must strongly address the misleading reporting regarding the robbery at Bweza Lodge. This was not an attempted robbery. The robbery actually took place, and I know this as a fact because I was one of the victims. This is not hearsay or speculation; I am speaking from firsthand experience.

When reporting such serious incidents, accuracy is not optional — it is a responsibility. There is a significant difference between an attempted robbery and a robbery that was fully carried out. Misrepresenting what happened distorts the facts, downplays the seriousness of the incident, and disregards the real experiences of those who were directly affected.

I call on the reporter and the publication to correct this misinformation and report the incident truthfully and responsibly. If we are going to tell these stories, let us tell them as they actually happened, not in a way that misleads the public or diminishes the victims’ experiences.

The victims deserve to have their voices heard, the public deserves accurate information, and the truth must never be compromised for the sake of a headline. Journalism must be grounded in facts, accountability, and integrity. Please get the facts right. Accuracy matters, the truth matters, and the victims matter.

  1. Sad, RIP. Their killers will also die someday. Killing a human being, especially extrajudicially or in a non-combat/hostile situation is akin to killing an angel/spirit. I keep wondering if murderers/killers also sleep at night. I believe ghosts of the people they killed haunt them until they also die.

  2. Eh! So sorry; I thought this kind of crime was a thing of the past! I hope the cameras work this time to identify the motorcyclists and bring them to book!

  3. In other words, who in his/her right state of mind can still deny that: under the regime of gunmen, by gunmen and for gunmen; more Ugandans lives and deaths, will be defined by the gun!

  4. The robberies of tourists aren’t “attempted,” they are very real. On October 7th, my dear friend was robbed at gunpoint at her hotel and the robber even shot his gun.

And now it appears the media there is attempting to downplay the seriousness of the crimes by referring to them as attempted and removing her firsthand comments from this very article. The threat and danger of armed robbery of tourist is very real.
