ISABELLA MWEBAZA is the youthful proprietor of Paint and Sip Uganda, in Ntinda, Kampala, the place where one comes in with no clue about art, and walks out feeling like an art connoisseur.
Paint and Sip, which is really an art gallery, offers painting sessions to the public and lets clients keep their art pieces. Recently, when Quick Talk stopped by with a group of friends for a painting and sip- ping session, she bumped into Isabella as the group proudly left with their finished paintings, and they chatted.
How would you describe yourself, Isabella?
My name is Isabella Mwebaza, but I’m fondly known as Bella Art Uganda. As a passionate painter and entrepreneur [Paint and Sip Uganda is full of Bella’s artwork – intricate, beautiful pieces, some of which clients are allowed to replicate], I’ve had the privilege of turning my creativity into a career. I’m the founder of Paint and Sip Uganda, an innovative concept that combines art, socializing and relaxation.
I am also a born-again Christian; my faith is the foundation of my life and work. I’m deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible, which inspire me to empower and uplift others.
You are so talented! I looked at the Bella Art pieces… I’m speechless.
Art has always been my passion, a creative spark that ignited within me from a tender age. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to formally study art in school, I was blessed with an innate talent and insatiable desire to create.
As a child, I would often express myself by painting the walls of our home with vibrant crayons. Those carefree moments sparked a lifelong love affair with art. I cherish memories of shopping with my family – the thrill of selecting new paints, brushes and canvases!
Painting has remained a source of comfort, joy and self-expression.
Would you call it a profession, or a calling?
Both. First, it’s my calling. I firmly believe that art is my ministry; through my art, I aim to uplift and bring joy to others, reflecting God’s love and beauty.
As I’ve grown in my faith and understanding of the world, I’ve come to realize that we live in a capitalist economy where creativity can be harnessed as a profession. I’ve worked diligently to forge a career from my art, while staying true to my values.
What are your influences and inspirations?
My artistic influences are a divine blend of the Word of God. The Bible serves as a profound source of inspiration, guiding my brushstrokes and infusing my art with spiritual depth. I love listening to sermons as I paint. Also, collaborations with fellow artists spark creativity and foster growth. Lastly, my own imagination plays a vital role in shaping my artistic vision.
How was the Paint and Sip idea birthed?
Paint and Sip Uganda’s official launch in 2020 marked the culmination of a creative journey that began years earlier. In 2016, as a university student in Nairobi [interestingly, she studied accounting at university, not art!], I explored my artistic side through body painting, performing at student events as ‘Bella Art Uganda.’
This experience not only honed my skills but also taught me the value of interactive art in bringing people together. When I returned to Uganda, I shared my body painting expertise with the local party scene, captivating audiences and building a loyal following. This community became the foundation for Paint and Sip Uganda [she has since progressed from just body painting, to canvas, bags and murals].
Do you feel you’re introducing people to new talents?
That was the first time I painted anything – or even sketched. Ever. Yes. Paint and Sip Uganda is specifically designed with beginners in mind, catering to the vast majority of Ugandans who, like myself, grew up with limited exposure to art.
Unfortunately, art has historically been stigmatized in our culture, leaving many to believe that creativity is an innate talent rather than a skill that can be developed. However, at Paint and Sip Uganda, our experienced instructors are dedicated to debunking this myth.
We’re passionate about unlocking the hidden artistic potential within each individual. Our goal is to empower Ugandans to embrace their artistic side, regardless of skill level or background.
Strange that there is no art school in your story…
I had the privilege of attending several esteemed institutions throughout my academic journey. My primary education was at Buckley primary school in Iganga district. I then attended Nabisunsa Girls School, Seroma Christian High School, and later completed my A-levels at St Mary’s SS Kitende.
I enrolled at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya and graduated with a first-class degree in Accounting, earning a Bachelor of Commerce degree. This academic foundation has not only equipped me with a strong understanding of business principles, but also instilled in me the discipline and work ethic necessary to succeed in my artistic and entrepreneurial endeavors [Quick Talk can attest: Paint and Sip is a seamlessly-run place].
Do you know any love stories you’ve indirectly contributed to?
Yes! Paint and Sip Uganda has become a haven for lovebirds and a popular spot for romantic gestures. We’re thrilled to have played a role in numerous proposals, with a perfect 100 percent ‘yes’ rate!
Our social media platforms are filled with heartwarming testimonials and photos of happy couples who’ve shared their special moments with us.

It looks busy! When do you ever have ‘Bella time’?
At Paint and Sip Uganda, we thrive on being busy, embracing the mantra that ‘busy is a blessing.’ We take immense pride in ensuring our studio and restaurant are always ready to welcome guests, seven days a week, from 11am to 9pm.
To maintain our high standards, we’ve implemented internal structures that prioritize rest and rejuvenation. Our team members have scheduled days off, allowing us to recharge.
I’m deeply grateful for my exceptional team, who share my passion for art and exceptional service. Having started this journey alone, it’s a blessing to see like-minded individuals join me, dedicating themselves to delivering outstanding experiences for our guests. Their hard work and commitment are invaluable, and I feel fortunate to have them by my side.
So, what do you do when not painting?
I cherish moments spent with loved ones, nurturing relationships that bring joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s a movie night, a fun activity like chocolate making with my sister, or simply sharing laughter and stories, I prioritize quality time with family and friends.
I’m also an adventure-seeker, always eager to try new experiences, explore new destinations, and immerse myself in different cultures. Traveling allows me to broaden my horizons, gain fresh perspectives, and return home inspired. And, let’s be honest, I love a good nap!
How else are you using your brilliant art skills?
I’m collaborating with a collective of artist friends to organize an art exhibition later this year. Furthermore, I feel a deep sense of purpose in utilizing my art as a vessel to spread the Word of God. I believe that art has the power to inspire, uplift, and bring people closer to their faith. This dual pursuit aligns with my passion for art, faith, and community-building.
When do you paint all those things [at Paint and Sip Uganda, even the washrooms walls are peppered with beautiful art. Hundreds of astounding art pieces, most of them by Bella Art Uganda, cover every space of the premises]?
Over the past five years, our studio has accumulated a diverse collection of art pieces, many of them created by my own hands. On average, I produce at least one painting per week, although some weeks may be more productive than others.
With over 200 paintings completed to date, our studio has become a treasure trove of artistic expression, showcasing my growth and evolution as an artist.
Would I be right to describe Paint and Sip as an art gallery/art school/ restaurant…?
All the above. It is a restaurant serving delicious cuisine and beverages, an academy providing art classes for all skill levels, a variety of art forms, including canvas painting, pottery, tote bag painting, baby onesies, bottle painting, spin art and crafts. It is also an art shop showcasing unique, handmade pieces and souvenirs.
