For those who enjoy a nice, quiet reading environment, I have got just the right place for you: the Buganda Library.
It is truly a hidden gem. I used to fancy myself as a novel lover back in the day. I read a few good books such as The Sword by Bryan Liftin, Live by Night, The Young Marie Curie, The Pearl, Gulliver’s Travels, to mention but a few.
But as time went on, I became more of a movies and series lover, and scrolling on the internet became my other fun way of spending my free time. And that is how I slowly lost my reading culture.
But lately, it seems like I am getting back into the game. I first got an interest in Theology (academic focus) and the history of Christianity beyond what is taught in the church service, and that is how I started scavenging the internet looking for book references.
But most of them were not satisfactory. I decided to look for public libraries around Kampala, and that is how I found out about the Buganda Library, located just opposite the Kabaka’s Palace (Twekobe), on the left side as you are coming from the Royal Mile Despite being in the city, the library is situated in a quiet environment away from all the noise and is fully stocked with a number of good books.
Although it is called the Buganda Library, the name has more to do with its ownership and administration, and little to do with the range of literature in stock.
It is not limited to books about Uganda’s biggest kingdom; it a one-stop centre for a wide range of books about science, geography, physiology, history, books about almost everything in the world.
There are books about most religions and their backgrounds, encyclopaedias, the list is endless. Much as I did not get the specific book I was looking for that day (A History of the Christian Church by Williston Walker), I ended up delving deep into ancient Jewish books, apocrypha and sacred writings, and a number of other books.
Oh, did I tell you that the library also provides free WiFi? And all this comes free of charge! I was pleasantly surprised, and must go back soon.
