The single table and sweltering heat around the reception area did not make good eye candy either, at this Mawanda road-based restaurant.

But with such a rich Indian and predominately vegetarian menu and a hidden leathered comfortable eating area, it appeared all good and promising.

Lasooni fish tikka, my order went. It was pointless asking this ignorant waiter what type of fish this was, given that he did not even know what constituted this meal, running back and forth to enquire from the chef.

With his unashamed harassing Indian boss, everything that could go wrong started going wrong. Surely fish is fish until it smells and tastes repugnant rather than fishy.

The admittedly well-done curry had masked the fish’s horrible whoosh taste. How could fish taste this bad? Whatever type of fish this was, it is a far cry from the usual Ugandan tasty fish.

Luckily, the half-chapatti-half-butter naan and ginger tea were able to save the day. The soft-layered chapatti had a homemade crunchy crust while the tea was very well spiced.

Had I known, I would have settled for the Shs 10,000 kikomando of beans and chapatti rather than spend Shs 30,000 on the lasooni of which I only had a single bite that I spat out.
