First-person shooters work best with computers, because with a mouse, it does not take much skill to pepper an arena with the Heavy Cannon’s rockets before switching to the sniper mode and eliminating every Arachnotron turret in view with perfect aim.
A PS4 controller takes all that finesse away. Imagine turning the knob of a door with your feet. That is what it feels like, shooting on a console.
Is there a way to solve this issue?
Well, maybe. If you had a rifle in your hands, how would you shoot a target three meters away? You would raise the barrel, point at the target, and pull the trigger. A mouse allows you that; not so with the controller. Rather than pointing the gun, you need to sweep it.
Does that make sense? Let us return to our example. If you want to shoot a target at three meters, rather than pointing directly at the target, aim your barrel to the right of the target and then sweep it left. If you pull the trigger just as the barrel crosses the path of your target, you will probably land a hit.
If you have a controller in your hands, try to aim at something. Notice that it takes several seconds, if not a full minute to align your barrel with your target, and it requires a lot of small, careful nudges because any rough movements will swing you all the way around.
Don’t forget to reduce the sensitivity. If you leave the sensitivity untouched, every time you push the joystick in any direction, the camera will spin wildly.
Finding the right sensitivity requires experimentation. If the sensitivity is too high, you will continue to spin drastically with each push of the stick, missing your target altogether. If the sensitivity is too low, your speed will drop dramatically, preventing you from turning quickly enough to engage the enemies behind you.
Be sure to activate ‘Aim Assist’. From what I can tell, with this mechanism activated, simply grazing your opponent is enough for the computer to count it as a shot on target.
Try to keep your distance so you can make mistakes without suffering immediate repercussions. If you can’t keep your distance, then walk right up to every enemy you intend to shoot. You can’t exactly miss if your barrel is pressed against your target’s face. None of these tips can make shooting with a controller as exciting as shooting with a mouse. But they will make you a more competent gamer.
