Back in the day, a Ugandan movie needed a lot of drumming up to attract patrons to cinema, but lately, local productions are holding their own in the cinema halls. Just in the space of two weeks, the industry has released multiple new productions, the latest being Sabotage, which premiered last Thursday at Century Cinemax Acacia Mall in Kamwokya.
Starring Stella Natumbwe, Sharifa Ali, Jjemba Dean Austin and Denid Kinan, among others, Sabotage is a Mathew Nabwiso production, with the Sanyu maestro claiming director and producer credits. The premiere was graced by many of Uganda’s actors and stakeholders in the movie industry, as well as different media personalities.
The premier that was supposed to start at 5 pm was delayed due to internal disorganisation, starting at 7:30 pm instead. Sabotage is about a woman, Lucie, who joyfully anticipates her dream traditional wedding, only to find out that she is carrying her father-in-law’s child as a result of rape.
With this development and the ensuing drama, she battles mental health problems and also discovers that she has cervical cancer, making her contemplate abortion.
It is a movie about perseverance and second chances amidst adversity. Humphrey Nabimanya, the founder of Reach A Hand Uganda, said the movie talks about some of the reproductive issues faced by young girls, and thankfully offers solutions. Â
The premiere was attended by celebrities including Ykee Benda, Rehema Nanfuka, Miss Uganda Hannah Karema Tumukunde, Allan Kutos Katongole and Stellah Nantumbwe, among others.
