The news lately has been extremely depressing – the violent murders of so many people!

The police and conspiracy theorists have their dissimilar versions of the facts. With just the right amount of fiction, the rest of us are left confused and quite fearful of what might happen next.

The only thing everyone seems to agree upon is that the perpetrators have been males possessed by some macho madness. One purportedly shoots someone for scratching his car. Great balls of fire!

And then there are defiant royal guards, trigger-happy soldiers and boda-riding assassins! Men acting like toddlers in playgroup fighting over a toy; except instead of shoving others out of their away, they use guns with live bullets!

But just like each of those selfish toddlers has a loving guardian somewhere, every allegedly murderous man on the news has a woman who is not only swearing his innocence, but also praying he gets released back into her loving arms.

Bad boys can be alluring. They have a brooding overly-confident arrogance that irritates and attracts in equal measure. The movies set them up to be redeemable; they just need a good girl to whom they can bare their soul and they will find themselves and quit all their vile ways and voila! Life is good.

But I watch the crime channel. A lot. And the reality is quite different. A few of the bad boys change their ways, but most of them are stuck on a rickety roller-coaster that most usually ends in a crash that destroys those around them.

Does that mean they should not be loved? No. I’m simply saying don’t be surprised if someday that faithful lover becomes the victim. Think about the men who leave their wives for another woman, but then cannot understand why the new woman cannot trust him.

Chick is simply thinking: “You left her for me; it is only a matter of time before you leave me for someone else!” This conjecture does not always come to pass, but her fear is rational. If he has done it before, …

Now extend that theory to the guy who possibly shot someone over an accident: I would have to possess my own brand of madness to go home with him! Otherwise, I imagine that every time I burn his meal or displease him in some way, I better make peace with my maker and wait to die.

The thing with testosterone is you never know which way it will boil over. And you may watch and watch and hope to blow on it and turn down the heat if it seems to be getting out of hand. However, one day you turn your back for a second and dude will land a punch that breaks your jaw, runs a knife into your spine or just shoots at you!

So, I maintain that while bad boys may have their charm, when their badness brings pain to others in any way, we cannot be blamed if we run – fast and far.
