Good luck, Recho; what about family?

My father is George William Kawanda and my mother is Esther Nakakande. I have two siblings; I am the firstborn of three girls.

Hoo! And the firstborn chose music? Didn’t your parents freak out?

At first my parents were so bitter…they were scared their daughter would get spoilt. But with time I became famous; so, they sat me down and told me to be careful.

Why would you go for rapping of all genres?

Rap is within me; rap is me. Do you get what I’m saying? [Quick Talk: Not really…] It is a talent I have always loved to do as a young girl. I have been watching TV, but I’m most interested in hip-hop music, and now it is a passion. I was in my P.5 when I started mimicking and trying to rap.

How has fame changed you?

Nothing has changed, really. I’m still me and will always be me. Of course things don’t always go the way we expect them to sometimes, but you have to keep going.

Any Ugandan musician that really inspires you?

All of them are good, because we all sing differently; Sheebah has her own style, Vinka too has a different one, as does Fik Fameica and others. I have felt like I want to be like all of them at some point.

Okay, away from music, who are you dating?

Yes, I am dating, although I cannot talk about the relationship. But I’m surely dating someone.

Just give Quick Talk a hint then!

He is tall, dark-skinned, good-looking, handsome and cool [he sounds like a tall drink of water!] He also has some dimes ezimubezaawo (to survive). [Then raising her voice dramatically:] He is just goals, you know? Just goals!

Mmm! Are you romantic? Some music genres sound more romantic than others…

I think when you are in love with someone, romance comes automatically. Although the type of music I am doing is male-dominated, emotions and romance come when you really love someone, because the fact is that you are a girl and you have to act like one at some point; so, I do show feelings like anyone else.

I am surprised you just described a guy, though; the grapevine insists you date other women…

The style is male-dominated; so, people expect females who join hip-hop to be tomboys [and lesbians], and they cannot be blamed for that, because it’s a boy’s game. But when you have a God-given talent, there is nothing to do; you just have to fall in line.

What do you do in your free time?

I love staying alone and try to think on how to come up with a lot of new things. Staying alone is also a hobby.

Then when do you get time for your ‘tall drink of water’?

Of course time is there! [Shyly chuckles] I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t want to expose my relationship because the world is too wild. People have a lot of opinions and I don’t want their negativity.

Alright, what was your favourite subject at school?

History, because I love reading.

Meanwhile, your new song… that’s an interesting title.

Yeah! It is called Gwe Nno Dd’awo and it’s everywhere; so, I request people to request for the song; and thank you guys for your support always. My songs are just out of creativity just like freestyling where I look at the person and know what they are going through and I start singing [Recho is truly gifted; she wrote the lyrics for Who Is She? in 30 minutes]. I just put myself in other people’s shoes, because musicians are like a voice to the voiceless.

Thank you for the time, Recho.

[As she says her goodbyes:]To the youth out there, just keep on pushing; let it be music or any other business, just keep on going. [Amen].
