The original Naked Gun consisted of three spoof comedies about an incompetent police detective with a lot of heart who navigated various hilarious mishaps.
The franchise was presumed dead after Naked Gun 33 1⁄3: The Final Insult in 1994. Naked Gun: What 4? Rhythm of Evil was briefly considered back in 2009. Leslie Nielsen was expected to return for one final installment.
But after several failed starts, Paramount killed the project. The 2025 version is a sequel to Naked Gun 33 1⁄3, and it stars Liam Neeson in the role of Frank Drebin Jr. So far, it has a 90 per cent critic rating and an 80 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Critics have praised Neeson, whose serious persona and gravelly delivery contrast sharply with the silly events unraveling around him. They expect audiences to laugh, cringe, and groan in equal measure.
Whether or not the film will work for you depends on your sense of humour. Most reviewers agree that, at the very least, it does not embarrass its predecessors. You can watch it in cinemas today.
