The pair comprising Madrat (Dickson Lubega) and Chiko (Frank Mubiru) held their annual comedy show, Nseko Buseko Season 5, under the theme “10 Years of Madrat and Chiko” at Sheraton Hotel Gardens on Independence eve.
Gates to the show opened as early as 3 pm and by 7 pm, the VVIP and VIP sections were packed with enthusiastic fans who had gathered to celebrate the comedians’ journey. The night’s hosts, fellow comedians Uncle Mo and Uncle Mark kept the audience entertained as they waited for the main act.
At exactly 8 pm, Madrat and Chiko came on stage igniting the evening with their signature humour. Dignitaries such as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa and other legislators including Minister Phiona Nyamutoro and Kampala Central’s MP Muhammad Nsereko were also in attendance.
The duo opened their set with jokes about the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was Madrat’s humorous mispronunciations of English words that sent the crowd into fits of laughter. This gave Chiko the opportunity to joke about the importance of parents sending their children to good schools.
One of the night’s highlights was a joke about Madrat’s mother, with Chiko poking fun at their similar height. The audience roared with laughter as they continued to deliver fresh material, a refreshing change from their usual delivery.
The show also included playful jabs at media personality Kasuku, recounting a funny incident during the pandemic when police were called to break up a party at his home. As the night progressed, the duo directed some light-hearted humour towards the deputy speaker and Minister Nyamutoro, who took the jokes in good stride.
Tayebwa congratulated the duo on their decade-long career saying, “In our culture, when you come to a function, you carry some cows.” Madrat’s mother also addressed revelers, expressing her gratitude and pride in her son’s success.
Other comedians including Tumbeetu and the Talkers also performed, keeping the crowd entertained. However, Daniel Omara, known for his English stand-up comedy, struggled to connect with the largely Luganda-speaking audience who began calling for him to leave the stage.
Musical performances from artistes such as Mesach Semakula, Mikie Wine, Grenade, Lydia Jazmine and Ziza Bafana also added to the night’s entertainment. The event also featured an awards segment where Madrat and Chiko recognized brands and individuals that have supported them on their journey.
Talent Africa’s Ali Alibhai, who was also the event organizer, said, “This show has become a cornerstone of Ugandan entertainment, and we look forward to many more years of laughter and creativity.”
Hillary Baguma, Uganda Breweries brand manager of Mainstream Spirits said the anniversary celebrations attest to the brand’s effort to bind consumers while supporting the local creative industry.
The show ended at midnight with Madrat and Chiko’s 10-year anniversary making a statement about the vibrancy and growth of Uganda’s comedy industry.
